Generally in the movies Aliens are always being depicted as wanting our "resources" when the reality as it appears is that those resources are plentiful across the galaxy.

They could be interested in specific resources that are only available on Earth. Courgettes or Mangoes for example.
Don't be fooled.  They're here for our wimmin and our jobs.

It isn't necessarily true that aliens from another star system, even another galaxy, are far more intellectually and technologically superior to us. It could be that through some fluke of science they have worked out how to achieve light speed, and possibly in the future our own scientists will kick themselves as to how easy it all is.

We also don't know what's on their cosmic doorstep. Perhaps wormholes or even something unforeseen (by us) are identifiable, perhaps even visible, and they've experimented with and used these. Perhaps through some obvious ease that we haven't even thought about. It could also be they have resources in their star system that are different and/or more abundant to ours which protect their craft through such journeys.

With our species we get a genius or two who come around every few generations and transform how we think. Maybe they just had one 'freak of nature' genius who came along and transformed everything. Perhaps they have brains that remain largely untapped by the norm, say at 1% intellect capacity, but then huge, but rare, variations in brain power exist, say up to 90%. It is thought that our brains operate at around 10-15% of capacity (think?). Theirs could variate much more.

Maybe they're incredibly intelligent at some things but complete dumbasses at others. Also, maybe we are warring types, but they don't have a warring bone in their body. Maybe they don't even know what a weapon is.

So, lets not be so sure that they are superior to us. They may have discovered how to travel at light speed, but we may easily outwit them at other things.

Without giving credence to the current stuff floating around, it's also possible that another lifeform might have a vastly longer lifecycle than us. We live 500x as long as a fruit fly, maybe an alien might do the same and have a typical life of 50,000 years and thus experience time quite differently - that might make the idea of travelling for a couple of decades much more palatable.

Especially if you plan your stops. Minor detour via Omnicron Persei 6 for some antiquing, pop to Sirius 4 to see the majestic sulphur lakes...

In that case, they're already here. How else do you explain Keith Richards.

Switching channels last night I caught the last hour of Close Encounters of the Third Kind on More.

Not seen that on TV for a long time.

We're being primed for an announcement. Expect Independence Day, Contact, War of the Worlds and Mars Attacks on your screens soon.

Also that one where a farm in the US gets attacked by little grey men, filmed using a hand held camera like Blair Witch. Rubbish but pretty tense from memory.

Do you mean Signs? Bloody good one.

Personally I’m more a fan of Men In Black.

It'll be fine if it's those aliens, all we have to do is chuck water at them.  They won't even bother invading the Northern half of Britain, it'll almost certainly be raining.

    Oops, spoilers...

This is a famous intriguing case that's worth checking out if you're interested in the subject.

Interesting about the Alaskan weather balloon that was shot down and thought to be Chinese. The pilot saying it didn't look like a balloon, didn't behave like a balloon and made his navigation instruments malfunction.

Also, about this being a new arms race between countries trying to reverse engineer craft found. The first country to suss it out surely gets a huge military advantage.

If of course they are out there!

I think its likely now that there will be an announcement in the next few years. Firstly when they discover life on a planet outside our solar system or on Europa. That will make it science and not science fiction and from that point sightings won't be dismissed with a scoff as a bit of a 'Nessielike' joke.
