So we arrived at the gig expecting to set up and play in a marquee by the river Arun. The marquee was populated by tables full of food hmmm. Then the landlord explained that there was a hitch with the outdoor music licence at the 11th hour and he had cleared a room for us, OK. The room was the size of a small living room and had access to the toilets. So we figured we will be playing to ourselves as there isn't even room for a bloke with a flat cap and a whippet if we get paid it's a paid rehearsal, right.
So most of the gear stayed in the cars, no monitoring and we just played.
Second number in "Mollys Chambers" there's a bloke leaping about. Normally nobody dances to anything released after 1986. After "Californication" we played "Rockin' in the free world and the place went mad. There were some scary moments, once I thought I was going to be crushed by a large drunk woman who almost lost her footing.
In the end it was a fantastic gig Lol.

  • Am sat here on hols drinking a cheeky glass of wine before walking round to the pub to check out a band and meanwhile my bassist colleague has posted a photo of tonight's gig load-in in my absence - first floor up an exterior wrought iron spiral staircase. Enjoy the gig, lads!   =))

Couple of gigs for me this weekend, the White Hart in Royton, Oldham, always a good gig but I guess we will be on after the footy, and a new on tomorrow, "the famous game cock inn" in Bury, Lancs. To everybody gigging this weekend, have a good one!

Just got back from a gig in Birmingham city centre, in quite a good mood because a record label came to see us and actually liked us, plus our fans came out and it's always fun playing to actual living humans.

Plus, I love the soundman there because he has no trouble with stage volume - he gets a good sound regardless. So AC30 UP!

@Cirrus where was that then? Some pretty crappy venues as you get towards the city center
I’ll handle this Violet, you take your three hour break.

Yeah, we know that from long and bitter experience haha! It was at the Asylum 2. It was shit but maybe 3 years ago they extended the room and put in a half decent sound system. The carpet's still a bit sticky but there you go.

oh, okay. When I was still semi regularly gigging ( ie earlier this year) the rule seemed to be the closer to the city you got the more they felt you should be grateful for being allowed to play there and the more they felt they could rip you off.

Well, day after the "Famous Game cock Inn" gig in Bury, not sure why its famous, we played to a maximum of about 8 people all night, saturday night and the pub is all but empty - crying shame! ah well stay professional play the tunes as you would if were full and take it in on the chin.

I think we all have similar experiences to this at some time. As you say all you can do is play as if the place is full. Hope the next ones better for you.

Totally new venue for us tomorrow night Sat 26 Oct 2013, 9:30pm

We were supposed to be playing by the seaside but the pub closed last week but we managed to get this last minute booking at this place:

    The Marne Inn
    Thorley Park Centre
    Bishops Stortford
    CM23 4EG

I have no idea what it's like as a venue but if anyone is in Bishops Stortford tomorrow night then come along, say hello!

    :-)

Saturday 26th October. New venue for me too. We're at the Stumble Inn, Long Eaton.  Never been there before.  Apparently there's no room to swing a cat, so could be interesting.

We're at The Flying Horse in Blyth Tonight.

Quite nervous actually as it's our first gig in almost 18 months and our first with our new singer AND a dep bassist! Got the gig sorted and then our proper bassist announced he couldn't do it so my old chum offered to come up from That London to do it. Two practices and a strong pair of skivvies are all that's required (I hope!).
Went down well the last time we played there, so fingers crossed...

Not a gig but I'm playing a couple of solo numbers on acoustic guitar at an open mic' in Stokesley tonight.  As above quite nervous as I've never played without a band around me before.
