Who else were they going to pick though? They've obviously lost confidence in Bess, Ali has gone home, and it'd be a tough ask for any of the reserves to come in and play their first Test here.

Archer has been disappointing so far. If he'd been firing it in at 90mph I think he'd have got something out of that wicket.

If we had got to 400 then the bowling attack might not appear to be so imbalanced. But you can't arse up the batting and then ask the bowlers to skittle them out and be only 100 adrift.

Swann said on commentary there was no dew at all.

Over 22 saw both Indian commentators talking of the damp greasy outfield and how the ball skimmed off the surface. You also had England fielders armed with towels trying to keep the ball dry. It's not the sort of thick heavy dew we've seen in ODI games where the boundary ropes would be dragged across the outfield but it is there. The lacquer doesn't come off as quick in those conditions, Leach was gainfully employed relatively early,

If Silverwood and co selected this XI on the basis that they were confident of using getting 400, then I strongly recommend they avoid the local magic bean sellers. I think it's just a horrible misreading of the pitch.

I take Stuckfast's point about who else they could play. We're in this situation because the slow bowling department has been so dreadfully mismanaged over the last few years. Moeen went to Australia as number 1 in the Bayliss era and came home and that was that and now he may never play again. Bess did decently when Leach was sick, bowled like a drain last summer, and kept getting the chances. Some critics were still calling him #1 at the start of the Sri Lanka tour.

Two wickets for Leach in the first 35 minutes of play this morning. Interesting...

Yes Leach has been good this morning. Two more LBWs to straight balls...

Not a bad start for Root there!

He should be a handful on this track.

Is that the first wicket to fall to a ball that's actually turned?

Pitch and straighten. That's all you need. And now Root is in on the action. Nice work, Mr Foakes.

Good luck to those folk with Day 4 tickets...

Root looks like Murali on this track.

The way Root is bowling, we are probably ok without Bess.  Root actually looked better than Bess in the first test a lot of the time.

Root probably should have bowled himself yesterday though.

  • If you're bowling left arm around to right handers and you're getting the ball to pitch off stump and straight, it's still turning. You aren't bowling straight balls there.

If we can get them out for a lead under 50... fuck it. Let's go out blazing. Crawley and Stokes to open, just go for it.

Michael Clarke bowling darts all over again...

Blimey. Should Root have brought himself on earlier?

And will he and Leach open in the 4th innings?

    145 all out, Root 5-8!

Not quite what I expected to happen at 9am. India's lead of 33 seems to be worth about four times as much.

  • Not sure how MV works this out....

First innings deficit + fragile batting.

India could still win this by an innings!!

By the time India bat again the pitch is going to be even worse than it is now. If we can get to 150 this could be very interesting. But that's a very big "if".

With some of the things he says, I'm not sure how MV manages to put his trousers on unassisted.

If England bat like they did in the first innings, good luck to those with day 3 tickets.

Why was Bairstow playing that shot first ball?  He's got away with it, but he doesn't look like his head is in a good place.

His head will be back in the dressing room now. He's in no sort of form and that was no sort of shot.
