If you ARE John Bull can I have the money back for that rubbish printing set I bought in 1965?
Steady on. If it weren't for the John Bull printing set I wouldn't have learned about typefaces, leading & kerning.
Nor would I have found out about what happens when you put monkeys in charge of word processors & the Daily Mail...

    Another wonderful Dunning-Kruger post.

I'm pretty sure Emp thinks Dunning and Kruger are the old men from The Muppets.

Is Kruger the baddie from Nightmare On Emp Street?

    @Emp_Fab ;

i wasn’t trying to be mean when giving you reasons why your initial claim wasn’t possible. Essentially I have tried to give you “clipped notes” across the two threads as to why.

Your new claim of £6k for a boat that blows up a n other boat fails because of the price of the explosives and the mechanism of how they work. A ships hull is pretty tough and normal explosives may only dent it. So you need a “shaped charge” and military grade high explosives to penetrate the hull. This requires other things like correct standoff from the target, high quality reliable explosives with a sufficiently high detonation velocity.

BUT…. Here’s the thing, the Number ONE reason military kit like this is expensive (just like medical kit, dive kit and oil rig equipment) is that the ramifications of it not working are so high in blood and money that money is invested to ensuring it works 99% of the time..  It’s this design need that costs the big bucks.

For interest btw, In one of my staff jobs, I was involved with the assurance of certain key contracts for multiple prime defence contractors and their relationship with UK MOD…  most had. A fixed allowable profit margin of 5-8% with any savings made thereafter to be profit shared back to `mod. So whilst I am in agreement military kit can seem disproportionately expensive (most for reasons beyond profiteering) in the majority of cases it is priced fairly to deliver the core requirements.

Another interesting analogy for modern military gear, is to compare it to the much cheaper military gear of the past.

In WW2, to destroy a major factory complex in a city, the RAF might send 500 Lancaster bombers.

Each one had a highly trained crew of 7, each carried thousands of pounds (1940s prices) of electronic equipment and cost about 30k per bomber.

These would then fly to a target, a city centre usually, and drop hundreds of tons of bombs.  Most would miss by hundreds of yards or even miles, a third didn't go off at all.

Usually losses ran at around 2% to 4%, so somewhere between 10 and 20 of the bombers would be shot down and most of their crew killed.

A few dozen bombs would land in or around the factory...

Now, to do the same job, the RAF would use maybe six F35 stealth fighters.  These would land pretty much every bomb right on the target to within yards.  They would be very resistant to all but the most effective defenses, and probably all get home.  Probably all the weapons would explode etc. etc..

The sophistication of modern military tech is staggering, its not surprising its so pricey, but you get what you pay for.
We have to be so very careful, what we believe in...

You're all useless.  If the apocalypse came, you'd all be dying because none of you could build anything.  Forget the £6K, you lot are the B Ark.  When are you going to devalue the leaf?
Humans are destructive parasites that will destroy the celestial oasis of Earth.  The sooner Homo Sapiens are extinct, the better.
