I've revealed all of the map on the surface (and quite a bit of the lower area), completed 100+ shrines, maxed out the energy cells and stamina and have 25 hearts when full.
I don't have many of the energy cells yet.... think I'm only on my 3rd battery.

  • Just did a sky island puzzle thing where you have to skydive through glowing rings into a pool to unlock a shrine. Reminded me of pilotwings on the SNES. :)

2 fans and a control stick, then stick a glowy flower thing on the front.

    Great for exploring

I've cleared two of the temples, so two to go, revealed all of the depths and completed 136 out of 152 shrines (which is better than I managed in BotW).

The best bit is that if I get to the end and in doing so complete most of the side quests, I've still got loads left to do.

Wait… I just went in the big hole to the depths….

WTF THERE IS A WHOLE EXTRA ENTIRE WORLD DOWN THERE?!?!
Yeah, there’s a depths that mirrors the world above it in each of the regions.  Look for them when you launch out of a tower.  Like, the depths by the Goron is too hot unless you have the right gear.  And there’s some sort of parallel between the light roots down below and shrines above.  I didn’t know about the light roots at first and was exploring some abyss in total darkness, but one of my kids showed me the light root and how it illuminates the whole area.  It’s really lovely.

Beside the caves and the depths, there’s also the various sky archipelagos.  Getting up to those sky islands is a challenge in itself.  All kinds of opportunities to experiment building flying devices, using the ascend rune, etc.

I wondered how they’d improve upon BOTW.  The fusing and tech features along with the under/over worlds is all brilliant I think.

I've got six shrines left to do.

I've cleared the four regional bosses so the next bit of the main story is to go into the castle.

I shall almost certainly do a lot of the side-quests and adventures first to fully enjoy the experience (I've done some of them already, but by no means all).

I don't think it's as difficult as BotW but maybe I'm just finding it easier as I played that first. That's not a criticism, just that I don't think I've run away as much this time :)

  • I still suck at fighting. Seems like most enemies can kill you with one decent hit. Think I need to spend more time completing shrines to increase my hearts/stamina. I’ve found plenty and activated them for quick travel but usually whilst on my way to do something else. I should let myself get side tracked once in a while but then I forget what I was originally doing.

You will benefit from more hearts, but also take time to fuse every weapon you can with various bits from your inventory and do some cooking for extra benefits in battle.  The standard weapons you find are pretty awful

Another thing to be aware of is the levelling up of monsters.  The more you beat, the stronger they get.  Makes some sense to run away early in the game.

  • Yeah all my weapons are fused. I’m just shit at combat lol. Even in BotW I was never any good at flurry attacks etc, could never get the timing right.
Anyone taken on a Gleeok yet?

I got a photo of the King Gleeok for a quest, then ran away.   I think I'm about ready to take one on though

I'm not great at combat either, I started off hitting targets with bomb flowers from distance but after that my usual approach is to get in close with a one-handed weapon and mash the button :)

It gets easier as you acquire fighters alongside you (I'll say no more to avoid spoilers).

If you have groups of enemies you can also shoot in a puffroom to make a cloud, then take them on one at a time, or a muddlebud at the biggest enemy so he fights all the others for you.

Just tried Ganondorf.   Failed.   Many more Sundelions cooked in food are needed.

Ahh, I have two but never summoned them during a fight, didn’t know you could do that!

Other than go round trying to kill some of the bigger monsters and do all the side quests I've now reached the defeat Ganondorf point too.

I managed to complete the shrines quest before clearing the skies because I thought it would be fun to try (following instructions to some degree) and I have all the companions it's possible to have.

I don't really want to finish it off just yet, so I think I'll be hunting monsters and building up supplies of food and elixirs and save Ganondorf for the weekend.

I've put it off a bit longer.

I'm doing some more side quests and upgrading armour.

I'm trying to get the Gloom set maxed out, which involves a lot of Frox battles in the depths.

    Better Gloom resistance is needed!!!

    Done.

Fully upgraded depths armour made that attempt much easier.  I think any fully upgraded set would have been good though.

This game is so much better than BOTW.   I'm not sure how they managed that but they did.

Finished the main story this afternoon :)

I can go back and do a few side quests if I want to revisit Hyrule, but I'll probably have a rest for a while first.

Fantastic game with a huge variety of tasks and challenges, well worth the money.

I got the Master Sword! 3 temples done and most of the depths lit up.

I also finally got the autobuild thingy which I now really wish I'd done much earlier...

  • Queen Gibdo is a massive c#nt!
4 temples done and all the dragon tears found so I’m going to concentrate on finding more shrines and side quests now.
I’ve barley spent any time in the depths or sky so really need to make more effort there.
If only I could be as proactive about sorting my actual life out!

The depths kinda stresses me out.  Dark and spooky and gloomy.  I can be down there for only so long.

But I have 3/4 temples done, all 3 stamina wheels, 13 hearts, all the towers, all the tears and the master sword.  Now I just wanna chill, build my house, pick fights with monsters, hunt and forage, make some rupees, free Lurelin village and do a bunch of basic side quests to flesh out the story.  Also, I am finding these “Sage’s Will” things around the sky archipelagos in treasure chests, sometimes you gotta fight a flux construct to get the chest.

Also just did the sky-and-ground labyrinth in Gerudo Highlands, which sent me into another labyrinth in the depths.  Brilliant game.

  • I struggle with the depths too. Other than the Goron temple and auto build bit, I’ve generally avoided it. I just don’t find it as interesting as the surface.

The depths is fine provided you have a big stock of bright blooms and use them judiciously. Focus on unlocking light roots and it's ok.

I get turned around and lost too easily down there (same as inside the lightning temple where it’s dark and gloomy).  I use the bloom seeds, but in avoiding the gloom all over the ground I suddenly find myself having circled back to where I began.  Also, I don’t think I really understand why I’m down there other than “to find random things.”

Once I caught a stalhorse in the depths and was able to traverse the gloom no problem, which was nice.  But somehow I got the horse stuck somewhere and I had to dismount, it just stood there and wouldn’t come out for me to get back on.  Oh well.

What’s really fun is playing the game parallel to my two kids.  The game has so many little features that appeal to different types of people, we’ve all gone so many different trajectories since we started playing and it makes for good banter around the house.  The kids get themselves involved in so many side quests and they soak up so much info about the stories, items, characters, etc that I would miss if it wasn’t for them.  My youngest in particular loves animals and nature, she loves catching and riding horses around the kingdom, naming the horses, meeting villagers, mixing it up with the Yiga guys and all that stuff.  Their minds are so much more plastic than mine for sure.
