I'm mostly just wandering about doing shrines and towers so far. I did the Rito temple but not the others yet. Having a lovely time either way, at least until the gloom gets me :(

I just spent about an hour on Makasura Shrine near Kakariko. I was *this close* to doing it be building bridges uselign counterweights when I gave up and Googled it. There is a Zonai -related option that takes maybe 10 seconds.

    I feel foolish…

Ascend is the one that has caught me out once or twice, in that I don't always see it as a solution outside of the shrines, but I do enjoy using it when I remember to.

I follow someone on twitter who is big into using the zonai stuff to make mad vehicles/weapons platforms and I have tried a couple of her simpler designs with some success.

My big problem is always things that need quick reactions or reasonable skills are things I'm not very good at - never have been - like the shrines where you lose all your gear.

I like that you can play it the way you want for the most part.   Even temple boss battles have a lot more solutions than a traditional zelda game.

I really struggled on some of those shrines with no gear... but the last few have been done on the first attempt.  Sneak around and take out a couple of easy enemies.  Pick up everything you find and start fusing it to weapons to get the rest

I bought a Switch last weekend, mainly so I could play this game. I’m not a regular gamer, but now and again the hype gets to me. I’m on the last of the four Shrines from the first “tutorial” island, and enjoying it so far.

I'm at that stage where I have done all the story quest, a hell of a lot of the side quests, and could crack on to go fight Ganondorf at any point now.... but want to keep getting as many quests and shrines as possible.  it still feels like I have hardly touched the depths and not spent that much time in the sky???

I do have a slight issue with the storytelling element of this game though. The story flows better if you follow the order of quests it suggests to you.... but in an open world game where you tend to go after stuff that takes your interest it is unlikely most will follow this order

There is a twist at the end of one important story quest.  This works better near the end of the game, but I did this early on.  After that I had NPC's telling me stuff that no longer made sense, and quests to search for something I knew didn't exist.

There is one point a major reoccurring character sets you off on a quest..  It was a bit anticlimactic when I finally figured out how to reach him, but had already done the stuff he wanted to tell me about.

I’ve still barely done anything I’m “supposed” to do, but I’ve got a bunch of shrines and found some bizarrely high-levelled shields in a couple of places the game perhaps didn’t expect me to get to yet.

I quite enjoyed the sky islands - mostly just some good puzzles to get shrines & koroks so far.

Am I meant to have a bit more clothing on? I've basically got a loincloth and a thin piece of wool for a top!

Also, where do I get an axe from? I've been without one for ages.

Yeah, that is what you start with.  There is loads of clothing to collect and upgrade later in the game.

Use your fuse ability as much as possible for weapons.  You will find swords and axes all over the place but anything not fused tends to be pretty weak.  If you have destroyed some constructs or monsters you likely have some horns.  Drop one on the floor and fuse it to a stick or low powered weapon.

Nice. I want to spend some time chopping trees down. Will that work?

Mushrooms on sticks are absolutely hilarious!

Same.  I’m wanting to revisit old haunts from BOTW but I’m coming upon some obstacles, like tower doors being inaccessible, and I really like completing the map as I go, so that’s annoying.  And then cave after cave to explore, quests within quests, the tangents never end, a great way to get lost for a while.

The STEM stuff is pretty cool, too.  Like, sure, I wasn’t doing anything, let’s stop here for a bit and build a wagon or an all-terrain vehicle of some sort, see what happens.

You should be able to fuse a stone to any weapon to get a stone axe.

A bigger rock or boulder will give you a stone hammer

There’s a shirt in a treasure chest in the Room of Awakening.

As for pants, I haven’t found any yet and the ones in shops are very expensive.  I recommend stocking up on spicy peppers and making lots of cold resistant  meals.  Rito is freezing and you gotta spend a lot of time there, without pants.

I took ages looking for clothes. I recommend the caves around Lookout Landing- there is a side mission that gives you pointers but the stuff is there even if you don’t trigger the dialogue

i really have to get back to playing it but have just upgraded my internet after being without it for 6 days (now have fibre optic broadband) so have been playing elite dangerous odyssey and starting the new diablo game amongst other things atm.

i had mostly been just wandering about like a lot of people but i have done some of the main quests and need to unlock 2 more towers to fill the map (one is in a very hot place and one very cold so need to find the right gear).

i do miss the runes from botw as i want to keep using the square bombs but then realize i cannot.

i need to find one more special power glyph thing as there is one gap in the circle (not the amiibo as i don't have any of those).

definitely a great game for sure.

I'm not a gamer, however, my 18 year old daughter insisted getting this on release. Looks that same as the last one to me!

Gaming for me began with Myst and ended with Myst 4. I just don't get on with multi controls and massive inventories. I can only do click to move and then think about stuff.

Of course it looks the same as the last one.  It's the same graphics engine and set in the same world.

    It plays quite differently though.

I'm on shrine 115, I'm trying to get all of them to put of finishing the game

I've never played any of the Zeldas but just ordered a Switch with this game and I intend to give it a go.
Since I'm new to the franchise - I was thinking about playing BOTW first, but not sure whether that's a good idea?

i'd definitely recommend botw as a first zelda game it is a fantastic game. but totk is fantastic also and you could happily play that too as a first zelda (both games compliment each other and each has something different to offer).

I've been playing it on my PC via Ryujinx for a few weeks. Good game, but it is huge so be prepared to lose a lot of hours in it!

Shrine 115!?!?  That took you no time at all (not knowing how many hours you’ve actually logged).

I’m all about the shrines, towers, and the whole economy of foraging, cooking, getting ore, and preparing for the battles ahead.  Trigger some random side quests along the way.  It’s a great way to get lost for awhile.

I think I’ve got like maybe 25-30 shrines and I took care of the blizzard in Rito (I don’t wanna be too specific and spoil anything).  And then I have the whole map save for the three most southeastern regions.

It's been played most evenings since release for a few hours each time.  Life still goes on around it.  My wife and I are playing it together.  We can generally see a solution to most puzzles pretty quickly.

The best tip for finding shrines/lightroots is that the depths and surface are mirrored, although many surface ones are hidden in caves.

  • I’ve done the Rito and Zora parts of the main quest, a few shrines and towers plus some side quests. Gonna concentrate on finding towers to unlock the whole map for a bit as I don’t want to rush the main story.

On a side note, can anyone recommend a replacement joycon?
My original blue one has some drift in the stick, I’ve got a nice third party set that I normally use but they’re a different shape so don’t fit in the case. Don’t mind buying Nintendo ones but they always seem to be sold out!

I've revealed all of the map on the surface (and quite a bit of the lower area), completed 100+ shrines, maxed out the energy cells and stamina and have 25 hearts when full.

I'm rubbish at the big fights but I've done the Riko one and reached the Zora one. I've done one or two of the side stories and collected all the tears.

My next plan, other than mooching around doing bits and pieces, is to build some devices to use for the final fights and for generally swooping about defeating some of the bigger monsters. I'd like to get my head round the Korok Forest too (I've done one of the shrines but the Koroks aren't talking so there's something to be done but I don't know what, and I'm resisting looking online just yet).

    You gotta collect tears?

I gotta spend more time underneath and exploring it’s connection to the main kingdom.  I’m still pretty light on the lingo, don’t have the narrative down yet.  But my kids are amazing little sponges, they seem to know the names of everything already.

Yes, but I would do this after the other temples for the best narrative flow.
