Well, I've joined the PRS Silver Sky SE crowd...

Very very impressed, if I'm being honest. Mine came in the green, and as many say, it looks really good in the flesh.
Set-up is great; I prefer the trem floating, so will sort that out. Maybe touch lower action too...

Stonking value for money, and it's sitting alongside a Masterbuilt Strat

It is very Straty, as people say... instant Richard Thompson for me, and the 2 and 4 positions are alarmingly good.

I'd love to try a 'real' Silver Sky, if the SE is this good.

I had a really good deal on this as well ;)

The SE Tremont I would fit the bill in deep purple with a hard tail. Specs read well, looks well made in the pics and good price too.

Nice one Waz! I have the green one as well and it looks so much better in flesh than on my poorly-lit-mobile-camera photo.

I'm glad to read your comment about the quality as I was bit surprised by one of the previous posts about them feeling cheap and some £200 guitar appearing superior. Of course each to their own but I was genuinely amazed how my opinion on the guitar could be so much different!

If you're ever near North Wales let me know, I've got a 'real' and we can have a brew and compare!

I went to an actual guitar shop yesterday, first time in about 3 years.
What I found was the SS felt cheap and I really didn’t like the neck. I plugged it in and it sounded very quiet, dark and dead. I was very surprised.
They have 2 more so I tried them too in case it was an anomaly but nope all were (as you’d expect from PRS), pretty consistent.
The cheap Jet 400 strat I tried though was truly amazing, felt great, played great and sounded like a very good strat.
Oh and I also tried my first chapman and it was really good too.
It just goes to show don’t base your opinions on the internet and go out and experience the guitars with your own hands and ears.

Despite the Jet only being £169 with a neck a touch too narrow for me I’ll still probably get one as it was a fun playing and great sounding guitar.
The chapman felt very heavy and I picked it up out of pure curiosity. I liked the neck profile and it was very resonant. Plugged in it sounded and played great. If it didn’t say chapman on the headstock I’d have walked out with it. I may still go back for it.

Ive got to say Im surprised at this… if anything, the couple ive played seem quite bright…

Still, its all about opinions :)

The SE SS is a bloody great guitar I think. Maybe its the single coil in me, but Implayed a few PRS last week, and the SESS just stood out.

Ive landed one at a gorgeous price, but at any money, this is impressive.

I did play one at GG, though, where the knobs seemed a bit twisted/spiral. Mine is fortunately not like that.

I have a strange few days; gone from playing a Masterbuilt Jason Smith Strat into a Two Rock, to a SESS into a Boss Dual Cube LX !!

I'm with you on the tonality. To my ears it's on the brighter side (I normally play SC guitars with lower output vintage style pickups). The bridge pickup is a little less bright / more rounded than a typical 60s Strat tone.

That may of been my comment, but about the hollowbody feeling cheap. I still think the cheapest epiphone Dots Ive played over the years felt better than the 2 I tried. I was gutted as I ready to buy one.

Actually, I agree; I thought Id like the Hollowbody Piezo - but it did play a bit 'cheaper', although the look and finish was great.
Ultimately, unlike the SS, it did not grab me.

Don't want to be seen as the spoilsport just this video shows a bad one , nut fit ,wonky vol contol knobs ,frets not polished, loose scratchplate screws and it sounded really dark as mentioned by @grungebob earlier in this thread.
When he mentioned this issue a few days ago i thought hmmmmm every review i've watched on you tube  they have  sounded stratty and chimey but the one on the video does sound  "Dark" .
Perhaps its a bit pot luck?  75% good /25% like the video and the three S/Skys grungebob tried in the guitar shop .

  • Be interested in having buyers comments on what relief they have on these. It came set up with almost zero relief but was choking then with full bends on the g string on frets 15 and up.i generally like a flat neck so not sure if the radius dictates having some relief in the neck

The jury is still out here on the Hollow Piezo. I can totally see why folks are saying it feels cheaper, I think that comes from several areas. The lightness of the thing doesn’t help it feel substantial for a start. The knobs, pots and switch definitely don’t feel at all premium. Presumably because it’s not the premium guitar and should be less than the Core hollows. Also, and this is very personal, a gloss neck doesn’t feel nearly as refined as a good satin finish.

There isn’t really anything I can point to that would make it a better playing guitar if more was spent on build or parts. It is simply a very good guitar.

Compared to the last Casino I had, my Hollowbody is built like a brick shit house and feels it.  Nothing flimsy about it at all and it just works as intended.

The difference between the first and second in that video is fairly obvious. I don't think it's a case of being a spoilsport since obviously things do get out there from time to time with issues. It's a bit unexpected with PRS since they do have the reputation for being incredibly consistent, but nothing is bulletproof.

I tried one in the shop over the weekend. It was good, but nothing that screamed "wow, this is the best thing ever"

Instead, it was just another good strat type guitar in a world of good strat type guitars for around the same price like the Sires and Fender Players. It was also a lot heavier than I expected.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

  • I welcome this mainly as there will probably be plenty around the £400-450 mark secondhand next year.
We wish, bedroom dealers will buy all the 2nd hand ones and bump the price up quoting how well they are. Made etc

I think realistically for the price that's more than good enough.

Had a play on a Silver Sky SE again today, I really like them. Seems to hang better on a strap for me than a normal strat, do all PRS doublecuts feel similar? I've only ever played them sat down! One of those guitars that just feels "right" when you first put it on.

Shame the SS is so ugly though cause it feels way better than a normal strat to me, and i liked the sound of it more than most Fenders I've tried - seemed warmer and fuller, less harsh with gain.

You're right about the 'warmth'... I have been so impressed with the SE SS; in fact, I've acquired a Core Silver Sky today.

Probably sell my green one, but I must admit, there is very little between them, as others have reported.

I’ve just joined the Silver Sky SE party. I originally ordered a moon white model and that came Friday. I have to admit I was really underwhelmed with it as it sounded a bit flat unplugged and plugged in, and the neck felt very dry to me. It also had a deep indentation in the neck finish that felt like some over sanding perhaps. The satin finish was also not that nice under the hand. So I went to Andertons this morning to return it and tried it against 2 evergreen models. Both the evergreen models sounded a lot better, and one really stood out. The neck finish on this one also felt completely different, much smoother and softer under the hand, but had that more orange hue to it. It also rings like a tuning fork, so I took that home instead. Side by side against my masterbuilt and there’s no noticeable difference in quality of tone. Both guitars play great too. This Silver Sky SE completely holds it own against the masterbuilt, so it’s an absolutely bargain for £599 if you get a good one! I have to say as well that evergreen looks incredible in person! My favourite colour by far. Though I hated it in pictures.

Part of the attraction of PRS over Fender/Gibson is consistency so it's a bit disappointing if you have to root out a good one.

That said I would imagine S2 and beyond are very consistent.

Rhett Shull will be chuffed to bits though, apparently that must mean the SE have character.
