Silver Sky SE - only £599

What's Hot

Just saw the Silver Sky SE on sale in a few places for only £599!

I’ve had the US guitar and it was lovely. Not tried the SE, but knowing PRS there won’t be a huge amount of difference.

Anyone tried one?

It’s going to be great playing guitar isn’t it but what a gopping range of colours.

  • I was offered them yesterday for even cheaper in store. £570 in 3 colours.

The colours are decent in person, just do not photograph well.

I think the Green one is pretty nice.

Where was it offered for £570?

Yeah the green one is the pick of the bunch for me. I’m going to see if I can drop hints enough to get one for my birthday in January.
To clarify, from my family, not you lot.

I’m so tempted by this offer but I’ve got other boring adult stuff to pay for. I hope whoever buys them enjoys them cos it’s a great offer for what looks like a good guitar!

Each to their own I suppose but I think they all look OK. I think being an S type the cream coloured one with the similar colour headstock to body colour looks killer and that's the one I'd be going for. I prefer the reverse headstock too. It's a stupidly low price for a non-US silver sky, which is £2k more. It wont be £2k better, that's for sure.

Not sure it is stupidly low. These guitars are made in Indonesia and £599 seems about right for something that is essentially a premium Squier.

In the nicest possible way, that is bollocks.

These things are easily the equivalent of the Fender Player Plus series retailing at over £750, way better than the Player series Strats which now retail normally at over £600.

It's not bollocks though. Do you think PRS are going to make a loss with these Indonesian made guitars selling at £599?

I wasn't using the Squier name in a pejorative sense. The current range of c. £400 Squier guitars are excellent and these SE guitars selling at a 50% premium over that seems fair to me. However, if you want to pay £800 for the PRS, be my guest.

    Yep,
I like mine. Even more at £599.

Although, I almost bought at a higher price.

I do think £599 is a nice area for the price as 'normal', maybe £650, but £800+ and no doubt higher in 2023? Nope for me.

Plus the market has been flooded (and they are still available) with £599 SS SEs, so it'll take a while to accept a higher price.

Cheaper than the pre-tax price on Sweetwater! Imo a great guitar for the money. Surprised that they are discounting it by this much – really slow market?

I have it on good authority, similar to @guitars4you, that these will not only be back at their original price, but higher when the stock overflow is fixed.

I’ve said to a few people privately, if you want one, get one. For my money one of the best guitars I’ve ever played under £1000. At £599? Probably the best.

I've had mine a few days now. I didn't want to post in someone elses NGD thread, & I didn't want to make another "NGD SE SS" thread either. I was going to post something in a month after the honeymoon period was over (& I still might), but here are my initial thoughts:

QC is spot on as I've come to expect from PRS, though the strings had to go immediately. The 4 springs included meant the trem was a bit too heavy for my liking, but after dropping the 4th, a bit of fretboard oil/polish, & a restring... I'm really chuffed with it. The neck is silky smooth & has a good hefty feel to it, which is absolutely my preference. The tuning stability is better than both of my USA Fenders, & probably the best I've seen on a non-locking nut guitar - & I'm saying that as a pretty heavy trem abuser. The trem is incredibly smooth & comfortable to use with 3 springs.

Tonally, I'm stuck in position 4 at the moment, as it suits my warbly weird arpeggios perfectly. It's an incredibly sweet tone without any unpleasant overtones. It's also surprisingly good at the 80s high gain kinda stuff, which is great given the tuning stability/ease of playing.

Aesthetically, I've no complaints, though I do wish the maple neck were a bit darker. A roasted maple neck would've elevated the guitar from an 8 to a solid 9/10 in my books - 10/10 is reserved for telecasters.

Overall, I'm very happy with it, though I'm still very much in the honeymoon period. I'll try give some better feedback in a month or two.

  • I'm sure they're lovely guitars - and I'm a bit of a recent convert to PRS - but the colours available are awful IMO. Such a shame, IMO

  • I welcome this mainly as there will probably be plenty around the £400-450 mark secondhand next year.

Thats what i was thinking but if the new batch next year go back to £800+++ S/H these will sell for at least the same price if not more.

I remember buying 2 2015 LP Jnrs for £270, and they were everywhere at that price. They are now £750 now.

  • I can’t imagine retailers going under £599 across the board, but there is a LOT of stock online when you look.

Yeah, these aren’t exactly flying off the shelves. Doesn’t bode well for a price rise next year.

I doubt it because the new price will be going up so the 2nd hand price will inevitably rise when you can no longer buy these new for £599.

That surely depends on how much stock they have? Guitarguitar don’t appear to have any yellow ones left now. I suspect they are selling very well indeed.

I’ve been stalking a couple for a few weeks now at more specialist dealers I guess, and they are still there. Probably not going to buy one in the end but I flirted with the idea for a short time. :)

If I was in the market I’d definitely get one. I wouldn’t have paid the original price but I think they are a great buy at this price.

If there was a maple board version for £599, it’d be in my hands now  ;) , it’d keep its US cousin company https://i.imgur.com/yeCvHSD.jpg
