Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten
2007 Documentary movie by Julian Temple
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800099/
Excellent documentary about Joe and includes a large range of Clash old footage, including early rehearsals, 8mm family films from Joe's childhood and a performance from the 101ers. A fine array of interviews with folks right from people who squatted with through to major stars as well as members of the Clash and those he alienated with his uncompromising approach to life. It's not entirely uncritical of him but it has a degree of reverence suited to the the likely audience and is aimed at those knowledgeable about and fans of his work. Clearer labelling of people being interviewed would have helped along the uneven narrative.
Recommended 7/10
I happened to watch Wings of Desire a few days before Angela and it hadn't aged well. Perhaps it's better if you can understand German, as the subtitles don't catch the idea of snatched bits of random conversations as well as speech can. It remains in this preliminary stage for what seems like ages before an angel decides to transition to human so that he can hook up with Solveig Dommartin (well you would wouldn't you).Thankfully Nick Cave and band make an appearance in the second half and up the excitement level. 5/10
I was looking forward to this when I saw it was on, as I'd never seen it before, but sadly it disappointed. It was eerie throughout which I liked and a highly original storyline but by the end I didn't care one jot for what had happened, or for any of the characters at all, unlike say all three characters in Walkabout.
In fact I just wished it had turned into The Hills Have Eyes and a mad slashfest to get it over with.
5/10
I put this on as I love Bill Nighy, and he was indeed superb in it. The film was set in the 50s, an era I love and it was beautifully filmed and with a spot on soundtrack. For me the music was noticeably good. All good, and I was loving this film a LOT, But ....
I'd better put my comments as a spoiler
About two thirds into the film, Bill's character is suddenly dead, and for me it just killed the film off. It was disappointing. Yes, he still appeared in flashbacks, and yes, we knew he was dying, but it just spoilt the engagement for me.
I was also disappointed at the end, when he co workers failed to stick to their pact. It kind of made his efforts a bit hollow.
The scene where he tells his problem to Miss Harris, I had a bit of a tear in my eye, emotional. Also, the scene at the end with the policeman was rather lovely.
Due to the spoiler comments, I'm giving it 7/10. Not a film for everyone, it's rather gentle. Bill got Oscar nominated for his role, he is always so good.
British crime/horror/folk horror starring Neil Maskell. I approached this eagerly having previously watched - and thoroughly enjoyed - Bull which also starred Maskell. The cast also includes the excellent Struan Rodger, the lovely MyAnna Buring, and Michael Smiley. I was expecting to really enjoy it as it had received good reviews. Oh dear...
On the plus side, there are some good performances from the central cast. I do like Maskell as an actor (within the confines of his usual genre) and he and Smiley are very watchable in this. Now we get to the problematic part: the plot.
Without giving too much away, our two antiheroes are ex-army assassins for hire. The get a commission from the sinister Struan Rodger, with a few oddities attached to their 'contract'. They start to go about their business (and be warned - they do so with extreme prejudice), but things - along with Maskell's mental health - start to unravel fairly quickly and become extremely weird indeed. The ending is plain batshit.
The issue with all of this is that I could only have a faint stab about what it was all supposed to be about. The ending didn't (for me at least) explain much - if any - of what preceded it and in the end I just thought it was faintly daft and a bit frustrating. Note that I described it as 'folk horror' at the top of the page - that should give you an indication of where things end up, but don't expect The Wicker Man.
Very disappointing - 3.5/10
“ Lissen, lissen mate, I’ve got it… less start off with the, the gangster plot right, burp….then, THEN, it gets into the, the horror bit. Waddya think eh? ”
“You, you, hic, you’re my bes mate you are and not onny that……you mate are a bluddy genus, hic. YEAH less do it!! “
What an odd film, although we watched it all….
Vinnie Jones was the only actor I recognised
The Bezonian is a club in London where mostly characters of Greek descent hang out, where most of the film is set, theres some interesting characters, I really quite liked the characters, but it takes forever for the thinnest of plots to hatch.
Vinny played Vinny, few words, one expression, shot people..
A bit Guy Richie on a budget, sort of, but not
Im struggling to say if we liked it or not…..we just gave each other “that look” at the end…
5/10
Creosote…Im on the fence
Like a straight-to-dvd rip off of The Matrix starring the actual leading actors of the original.
No redeeming features. 1/10.
Brendan Fraser in an Oscar-winning performance as a house-bound, morbidly obese teacher with chronic heart failure, and his struggle to relate to his daughter who he has not seen since splitting up with his ex-wife.
The whole thing takes place in Fraser's apartment so it's quite claustrophobic as well as sad, dark and in a few places bleakly funny. Outstanding acting from Fraser, but I found it a little 'distant' somehow, even though it's obviously purely about the emotional interactions of the characters - the best of them is Hong Chau as Fraser's long-suffering carer.
8/10

A real gem of a little film, a treasure no less.
The quirky tale of a young girl living in Louisiana back in 1977 who decides she want to get her voice recorded onto the record that is to be sent into outer space on the Voyager mission. It's a delightful tale of an underdog rallying a bunch of misfit kids into competing in a jamboree to try and win the chance to do it.
Southern humour at its very best with a wonderful performance by the young Mckenna Grace as Christmas Flint, the girl in question.
I absolutely loved it.
Shades of Moonlight Kingdom, Miss Firecracker.
Just wonderful. 10/10
Hell or High Water
Movie.
Netflix.
This is a movie for men, about men.
Two ill-matched prison-distanced brothers stage bank robberies to get their family farm out of debt, in rural shit-kicking middle big sky Texas nowhere.
Two cops, one about to retire in 3 weeks, the other, still middling, start to hunt them down.
Highly reco... screw, it. It's fucking brilliant.
10/10
Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and others including Will Ferrell and Rhea Perlman in a comedy fantasy about the plastic dolls…
When I first heard about this I thought it would be awful, then after it came out I read a lot of reviews saying it was brilliant. Having now seen it, I have to say I don’t think it’s either - it’s not clever enough to be the feminist satire it’s trying far too hard at being, and it’s not really funny enough to be a great comedy, although it does have its amusing moments… a lot of which are in the first ten minutes during the set-up - and it’s a total waste of Margot Robbie’s considerable acting talent. Gosling is as gormless and wooden as ever, Ferrell is somewhat underused and Perlman has the best cameo. Overall it’s too forced though - the basic idea is good, but the plot and realisation not so much.
5/10

I was expecting not to like this film, but I rather enjoyed it. Not sure if I like the "Non Aging" process, but Indy is back and a few Nazi boys have been taken down
7/10
I enjoyed it
Not a sequel, not really a reboot, more a new story set in a version of the Evil Dead universe which has very little to do with any of the previous films. It starts quite promisingly, introducing a family of fairly likeable, reasonably interesting characters (one of them is a touring guitar tech!)... but then jumps so quickly into the ED stuff that the character development's a bit pointless.
It's not bad. Not at all scary, but it gets pretty OTT and gory at the end, without ever having any of the demented fun aspect of the Sam Raimi films. I foolishly paid £5.49 to watch this on Amazon Prime last week, without realising that it was soon to arrive on Netflix.
Somehow I'd never seen this. Well worth a watch, Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger are both great. My only criticism is that the Quincy Jones score does not fit at all well with the tone of the film (unlike the excellent Ray Charles title song).
