Also, now watched all MCU films up to and including Spiderman homecoming. Thor ragnorok is next. Captain America civil war was my fave so far

Ladies In Lavender - quaint period drama with Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Miriam Margolyes. Written and directed by (but not featuring) Charles Dance.

The three main actresses are unsurprisingly brilliant, and both emotive and funny. The supporting characters aren't bad either, but although it's well-made the direction seemed a little flat and film-making-by-numbers - the plot isn't immensely exciting and there are no real surprises, other that it all turns out quite nice again.

Not bad, but Dance is probably a better actor than director.

Three Billboards... There's a consensus building hereabouts - great movie that takes a lot of unexpected turns and doesn't go for easy feel-good moments. The dark comedy was superb - the whole audience squeamed at one point (y'all know which one I'm talking about). 9/10

I'm going to have to see it, aren't I? I'm starting to feel like I'm missing out.

I would have watched it at the London Film Festival last year, but it was the closing night gala which meant tickets were £40 each...

The Last Jedi.

It works as a Star Wars film, I guess ( MrsTheWeary is the SW fan in the family) whereas taken out of the context of the franchise it’s not a great film unless you like things that go whizz bang. Some nice moments and it does make me want to visit Ireland.

Darkest Hour, no idea how historically arcuate it might be but darn good film. Gary Oldman is superb as Churchill.

I don't quite get this thread. I don't think anyone truly cares what film someone else has watched. It's just a list of films really isn't it ?

FWIW - not that anyone gives two hoots, I just watched Dunkirk - the one with Kenny Branagh. The film was great but the music was better. The haunting ultra slowed down of version of Elgar's Nimrod was quite moving. But, nobody's really reading this are they ?

You might as well say why should anyone be interested in someone else's opinion about anything. In which case why bother with the whole forum.

It’s a great thread. I’ve seen a fair few things based on recommendations here. Not just the latest release but stuff that’s hidden away on catch-up or prime video services.

Still worth it mate. Very good piece of cinematography indeed.
To be honest - I was a little surprised (positively) to see so much love for the movie on here - as guardians of galaxy and the likes were amongst the best recommendations ;-)
Anyway - go and see it, as it's very good.
Made me re-watch most of my favourite rural-US based movies again.

I watched it many times over the years and Jodie is brilliant in that.
Somehow I wanted "Interstellar" to be a natural sequel to it, but it's lacking that feel that "Contact" has.

Agree 100%.

Loved the Underground scene - so I researched whether it was true. Turns out it might have been.... Apparently it was fairly common for Winston to go AWOL and then pitch up somewhere in London just so he could talk to the average punters about their opinions on matters.

It made me proud to be British - but in a good way, rather than a Brexit/UKIP/EDL way - if you get my drift.

It’s a great thread. I’ve seen a fair few things based on recommendations here. Not just the latest release but stuff that’s hidden away on catch-up or prime video services.

I like it. I posssibly like movie reviews more than I like movies though - to quote Grandpa from The Lost Boys ( which I have seen): I just like to read the TV Guide. Read the TV Guide, you don't need a TV.
I suspect the nerdism of a specialist film review forum would drive me nuts though so this ( and the odd offshoot Discussion about specific films) works for me.

I haven’t seen Dunkirk but people get quite worked up about it on here so I’ll need to make a mental note to try to watch it at some point.

Oh yes, God do people get the wrong lessons from WW2.

Darkest Hour probably had the best screen Churchill yet IMHO. Privy Seal joke best all year as well, and I believe he actually said it!

Pixar film about a kid who is banned from playing music by his family who wants to become like his musician idol. Set on the Mexican day of the dead, the story is entirely predictable but it’s an enjoyable watch regardless. Lot of adults crying in the cinema in the last few minutes, doesn’t catch you off guard the same way as Up but if you’re invested it’ll still probably get you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film amd I'm not too bothered about historcal accuracy, I want entertaining, if I want accuracy, I'll look elsewhere....

I saw IT. I loved the first half of the original mini-series, and loved the book too, but SK adaptions are normally a bit disappointing. I liked this though. You can't help but compare the performance of Pennywise with Tim Curry, but if you can get the instinct to compare with the other versions, this is pretty good.

Good horror, with some humour thrown in. A solid 7/10 from me.

Went to see Darkest Hour last night. Personal view -

The first hour of the film is almost unwatchable, the dialogue must have been computer generated and the exposition painful.

What could have been a really interesting character study, was in reality a study in caricature.

The Germans produced Downfall, we produce this dross.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I think I was expecting some kind of plot, but hanging around with a bunch of likeable characters for a couple of hours and learning about the importance of family is fun too.

My Wife had 'Bridesmaids' on in the background whilst I was practicing. Some bloody hilarious pays in that movie and a good feel factor for a Saturday afternoon. All her friends recommended as a good girly movie but trust me a typical bloke will laugh out loud.

Darkest Hour - Great film. Gary Oldman is superb (as always).

The Post - Completely underwhelmed. Bearing in mind that it stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep and has half a dozen Oscar nominations I was expecting great things. Sadly, it really wasn’t that good.

The Florida Project : bleak docu style film about effectively a child raising a child in Florida

Really liked it, thought it was different and involving

I Tonya : Stylised true story about the skater and her life from Red neck poverty to Olympic hope and then back again

Great film overall

Molly's Game : another true story of a former skier turning to running and skimming card games and her arrest

Bit Hollywood for me but can see it doing well
