It’s a take on the cop paired with partner from another race and them dealing with their differences to save the day. But the twist is it’s a world where humans coexist with Elves (who are generally rich, intelligent, and powerful) and Orcs (who are portrayed as less intelligent, physically strong, and publicly hated for historical reasons).
Once you realise it’s not trying to explain absolutely everything that happens credibly it’s enjoyable. I mean the everything wrong with YT guy could fill a long episode about it, it’s quite a basic story and some of the significant parts were a little rushed, but personally I thought it was a fun watch overall. Felt very late 90s/early 00’s to me.
Film gets a 6.5/10 from me, 9/10 from my son. The cinema gets a 9.5/10. Reclining seats and loadsa legroom.
9/10
It's new.
I hadn't heard of it, but I've seen it now.
Comedy about celebrity girls set in New Orleans.
Adult humour.
Pretty impressed with it, and the CGI is naturally outstanding - I'd say 8/10.
In lieu of that I watched the iPlayer documentary about The Proclaimers instead. Reasonably interesting, various people involved who I wouldn't have guessed were anything to do with the twins. Spent some of it trying to decide if I still fancy KT Tunstall.
MrsTheWeary was watching the Wizard of Oz yesterday. I've never seen it all the way through although I've seen lots of bits. I'm not sure I feel drawn to it's very stylised look.
First - it's visually stunning, as in OMG jaw-dropping cinematography. If you like movies where the texture of the scenery, the shot composition and lighting create an almost non-stop series of masterpiece paintings, you'll love this. The only movie I've seen that's made me wish we had a 50-inch 4k screen.
Then there's the soundtrack. It manages to alternate between impossibly beautiful choral music and thumping dance tunes without ever jarring. It's the sort of soundtrack that has you scurrying off to IMDB to find out more.
It leaves you guessing, too. It's meaning is not laid out on a plate, many things still puzzle me. Significant things happen without further comment. The dialog, too, is sometimes quick, complex and hard to follow (at least via the subtitles). Some things are fantasy, or exaggerations. Parts of it are surreal. Especially Rome itself, as they somehow shot the movie without the hoards of real people and tourists getting in the way. So it really does feel like a gorgeous playground for the super-wealthy, Berlusconis and mafia to enjoy.
We will have to watch it again, because we had to follow the subtitles so closely that there was hardly enough time to savour its sheer beauty.
I can't wait. It's that good. 10/10
Spy: really, really funny, far better than I thought it would be. Melissa McCarthy as hilarious as ever, some cracking one-liners, and Jason Statham almost steals the show as the rogue agent.
Date Night: absolutely loved it, I'll watch anything with Steve Carell anyway because he's a fucking master, Tina Fey great as always.
Dinner For Schmucks: patchy, but some really funny scenes, again, Carell is superb.
Soon to be series by HBO. That could be good.
Lowish budget but some pretty creepy moments.
On the iPlayer for a while yet.
Meanwhile, behind the times as always, I just watched Spectre. Wow, what a non-event. It's so flat.
Anyway, I think I'll try and see more movies I've never seen in the picture in the pictures, because it can be wonderful if the audience is arsehole-free.
I didn’t love it ( on Amazon BTW) but it’s certainly interesting. Sort of French Indiana Jones/ The Mummy starring the insanely attractive Louise Bourgoin . I think this is the full version as it has Louise ( Adèle) taking her kit off, there was an edited PG version as well apparently.
I spotted the delightful Thomas Dutronc playing over the end credits which was a bonus.
Bright.
Fantasy cop drama, some great effects, racial inequality between Humans and Orcs. Elves and Fairies feature too, in a run down gone to ratshit LA, Gangs roam the streets, everyone hates the cops, but there is a doomsday device, in this case a magic wand, of enormous power to be kept out of the hands of the bad girl....forumla stuff in a different package, Will Smith saves the world again!........
Slated by the critics, but what do they know? One mans Fish is another mans Poisson!
I loved it!.....8/10
Amusing. Grotesque. Ridiculous and OTT in a good and entirely unnecessary way. Elton John really shoehorned in too.
The first is far better, but this was entertaining. 6.5/10
Lego Ninjago Movie. 5/10. A few laughs but after the first lego movie it's all getting a bit formulaic.
The highlight was before the film, there was a Now TV advert on with Morph and Chaz of Tony Hart fame. My missus leant over and said is the other one is called 'Mindy?'
'Mindy?' I replied. She said, 'yeah, they were called Morph and Mindy when we were kids weren't they?'
Then just into the film, Jackie Chan came on and she asked, 'Is that wax on wax off bloke?'
Unbelievable.
I so wanted to like this, but no. It was fucking crap.
1/10.
Interesting. The combined forces of the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTA, SAG, Kermode & Mayo, etc are against you.... but you could be right.
I haven't seen it, doesn't really appeal to me.
It Comes at Night
Low-key post-apocalyptic sort-of-thriller with some mild horror trappings... it's well-acted but bleak and unlikeable. I don't think it actually has very much to say.
