As mentioned by a few others I thought Lizzo's set was excellent. With a bit more material she could be a headliner.

Guns and Roses were a mixed bag. The band were competent, but felt like a high quality Guns and Roses tribute band, Slash was exceptional and is really just as good as he always was, but Axl just can't hit the notes anymore and he seems to have lost a lot of stage presence (although it's nice to see that he seems to be in reasonable shape these days)
Disagree about Slash - Thought there were many 'cringe worthy' notes, bum notes, miss hit, bad bends - Often the timing/phrasing between one set of legato licks to another was poor - As it happens on November Rain I thought Izzy's solo and licks were far more accomplished and polished - I was just expecting more and to be certainly more professional about going about his work

Agree about Axl's stage presence - He's lost that 'swagger'
It wasn't Izzy Stradlin; it was Richard Fortus.

I was blown away by Slash.
Sorry - my error and had already commented on him on another thread about playing his Ivison

I kinda agree, realise I’m more negative than positive on this thread, but lots of compliments on Slash here and I wondered what I was missing, that solo bit leading into sweet child was pretty ropy for instance.

I’m fairly sure that if there was some kind of technique battle between Slash and Fortus the latter would win. But it’s the mark of a professional that you know when to control your ego and Fortus has had plenty of other gigs to go widdly widdly.

I went ooh proper rock band giving it some welly, it’s not a recital who cares about a few bad bends FFS. However, the vocal mix issues made it a more difficult watch and the set got very samey so I did get quite bored of GnR. But maybe that's me.

On the subject of Blondie (who I thought were great), what was the lime-green leftie played by the chap to the left of the stage as you looked?
I might have missed the lime green one, I only remember him playing a pale blue one, but if that's the one it was made by Sully guitars:

Ah that was it - I was muddling my guitar colours up (there was a SFG LP being played on the other side of the stage) :-)

I liked it.  Never heard of the brand before.  Google ahoy.
Incidentally, I enjoyed the Blondie set - hard rocking and lots of lead guitar.  I don't think they'd have sounded like that in the '80s!  I suspect true fans probably wouldn't regard the current lineup as a true representation of the band, but it worked for me.

I also belatedly watched the Manics set last night and although I've never really been a fan, there was a ton of lead guitar from Bradfield.  The guitar might be dead(ish) in terms of chart music, but it certainly isn't in a live setting.

  • Slash has always been an extremely loose player or sloppy as some would define it.  He’s always been this way with bends out of tune and bum notes all over the shop.

During the first album recordings it drove the producer mad that his bends were so awful. It’s said he was sent away to pull his finger out and get it sorted.

agree with the last comment - And agree that the 2 guitar guys in Blondie made it more slick and polished and I think it worked - Certainly sounded more impressive IMO, yet never took over such classic songs - Just enriched them

7.3 million people sat at home and watched Elton. Macca had 2.5 (although he didn’t let it go out live so it  was on a lot later). That’s big by modern viewing figures.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a shame with the Arctic Monkeys… I saw them on their first tour and the punk energy was awesome, and while I don’t expect that to last their entire career, the whole image and posturing thing has taken over the music now… He was one of the great poets of modern day music, it’s just a bit of a shambles now. We can maybe blame Josh Homme? They started hanging out with him and whilst some the initial music was amazing (AM was a phenomenal album imo) that is where they also started trying to be as ‘cool’ as him, which was never going to happen really… Still reckon they will produce another incredible record at some point, as he is just so talented.
Im not particularly a fan, but Tranquillity base hotel and casino is the best record of last 25 years. Top 5 alltime for me.If Alex was from somewhere other than Sheffield (where hes not lived for over 15 years, hed be lorded as one of the best writers.
Hes changed style, same as Weller has numerous times, and hopefully will continue to do so and TBHAC will be the record Artic Monkeys will be remembered for.

Black Country, New Road on at 2PM @ West Holts Stage. Best to avoid if you don't like Jockstrap, as their singer is in this band too!

Also, the original singer left 2 days before their highly praised album was released, so I'm not sure how good the new vocalists are compared to old one who was pretty good.
Flipping 'eck they can all sing, what a talented bunch they are, and they totally ignored their acclaimed album choosing to play all new stuff instead. The Pigs song is a charming little ditty.

The caution still stands though, stay away if more than 4 regular chords in a song bother you

The point is he was a good version of Slash e.g. that's pretty close to what you would have got from him at a show in the early 90s

He wasn't suddenly going to become Steve Vai.

The blue Gretsch Adam Granduciel was playing sounds epic. He's had a different guitar for each song so far. Shout out for the Baritone Sax player, he rarely stands out in the mix but so often he adds a cool elemental tone to their rhythmic stuff. Top players all.

I didn't watch any of it at the time, because I'm a sad old misanthrope, but the one album that blew me away last year was Weyes Blood, and I'm just catching up on iPlayer. Personally I love her beautiful but slightly melancholy 70s California Carpenters thing, but I realise it's not rock and roll. She's quite funny about that between songs. (If you watch her videos, most of them seem to have bloody murder in them)

And finally I've found Sparks, so I'll watch that later.

She also did a guest appearance during the Caroline Polachek set, and they were the two best voices at Glastonbury IMO.

She certainly has an amazing voice (like Karen Carpenter or Jessica Harper, I'm a sucker for that sort of thing). I tried the Caroline Polachek album when it came out and ... not for me, I must admit. Didn't dislike it, but a couple of songs in just wanted to listen to something else. Maybe I'll try it again and it will click. Taste is strange.

(I just skimmed through her set to find the WB guest slot, which is lovely - it might be something as shallow as that she's riffing off music that I ran away from in the mid-80s, and the place I ran to was 70s music, especially West Coast singer-songwriters).

(By the way, I meant the one album by someone I'd not heard before - it was on co-rotation with the SBP album for a while, and I didn't hear the Weyes Blood until January this year anyway. Don't know why I feel the need to mention that, as no one would care, but 'tis so.)

Ok, I'm with you there. Polachek is operating in the pop genre, whereas Weyes Blood is in a different space, so that may explain the connection thing. Both are very talented, and write their own music. Here is a stripped down version of one of Caroline's better known songs which demonstrates her top notch vocal pipes (it was the closing number at Glastonbury).

The War on Drugs were easily the highlight for me…..anyone find out why Adam Granduciel  kicked his Swart amp out of its stack at the end of “Under Pressure”?…..looked more like frustration than an act of pure old style Rock’n Roll

Lightening Seeds, Blossoms and Rick Astley, Pretenders all excellent
