Sweet,  nice one, that's a super impressive time :)
    Especially seeing as I'm 60!

  • July summary: 135km total / 15 runs / longest 22km

Highlight: a few trots along the coast during a holiday in Crete. Necessarily fairly short (several were in >30C heat!) but beautiful.

Yet another steady month for me, managed to get out 9 times for 42 and a bit miles.

Holiday running is great isn’t it @djspecialist - since I started running my kit has been taken away with me every time and I love exploring new places.

  • Exactly @stevebrum - it's great that running requires minimal space in the suitcase, allows you to explore your destination, and is a great way to stave off jet-lag (not needed on my current trip, but has been very useful on others).

224km for me in July, doesn't feel like I've done that! Also a 5km PB.

    200K for me in July. A 25K and a 30K in there.
It was a bit less than I had planned but I’m in decent shape for my next marathon on Sept 10.

Good running everyone - keep it up!

    August: 208km, 16 runs, longest 15 miles.

Pleased with that given I missed nearly a week with a virus.

  • Good efforts all.

Only 39.4 miles for me from 8 runs.

Ticking over still (gym being the main focus) - I think I’ll look to target a late autumn event and a maybe a spring one, the mileage should then ramp up naturally.

144K for me in August - 12 runs including a 30K and 3 halves. Richmond marathon coming up on Sunday. It’s going to be hot, even with the 8 am start,  so I think I’m just going to take it easy and try and get round steadily.

It was sort of cancelled but not cancelled - emergency services declared it as an incident as people were dropping like flies. Someone needed to be defibrillated at the finish I heard, and I think they panicked massively. A lot of reports of not enough water, but I only found one station that was empty.

Although it was cancelled, most people on the course didn’t know and we just carried on. Marshals were shouting to tell us to walk to the finish from about 22 miles, but we didn’t really know what was going on. If you finished you still got a medal and shirt and an official time. In fact I didn’t even know it had been cancelled until later in the evening.

I think it was an impossible situation and they did their best in extreme conditions. It was up to 32C on parts of the course from about halfway, so pretty hard work. I was super conservative and then did a fair bit of walking towards the end as I was worried by some of the people I saw on the ground being treated. They said only 60-odd didn’t finish, but I simply don’t believe that. My time was 5.03, which is 30-45 mins more than I normally do. It was weird because even though it was so hot I didn’t really feel like I’d run more than 10K or so when I finished - I definitely played it super safe! Anyway, hopefully everyone was OK. Another one done!

Oh dear @26.2 that's bizarre. Glad you got around ok but the sight of other runners on the floor! must be sobering!

5:03 is incredible in those conditions - hats off!

Well done for persevering and sorry to hear it turned into such a strange scenario.  Hope everyone was ok in the end. An impressive time for those conditions!

The Hampshire Hoppit this year was in similar conditions but they were really good about getting runners to drink plenty,  including giving finishers their pint glasses half filled with water as each crossed the line.

Another 5k Parkrun PB for me today!

21.32, with an age grade of 74.48% as I'm an old boy of 60.

    Very happy with that

  • 130km / 13 runs in September. Completed with 22km this morning - which also served to work off a medium-strength hangover.

Best of luck @Benm39 let us know how you get on!

175km for me in Sept, less than usual due to yet more illness. I did a Nuclear Blast race last weekend though which was fun.

Any tips for people who have massively fallen off the running wagon?

A year or so ago I was doing about 100km a month and a slow half marathon was not a stretch for me. A 10km would be absolutely nothing.

I've had a bit of a perfect storm of having the snip which took me out of running for a month and then for a number of weeks in a row which seemed to be a perfect storm where I was either sick, it was 30 degrees, work was nuts, or I was away from home.

As a result I've put on 2 stone and I can barely run 5km. I'm doing in general a 5km once a week at the moment and sometimes having to stop to get my breath back. I haven't been this for about 4-5 years and it makes me dread running rather than look forward to it.
I actually got to the point where none of my running shirts fit me a while back, but luckily I've managed to drop a few pounds since then and I don't look like a day glo sausage.

This happened to anyone else, and how did you get back into it?

It’s not happened to me @monquixote but it sounds like there’s some work to do on your eating habits. If the weight gain is purely from stopping running - then you most likely didn’t have the balance of food and exercise right.

I’d work on your overall calories, get some strength sessions in, persist with the 5ks - just go slower and build your aerobic base back up. You do lose it.

Are you trying to keep the same pace as when you were much fitter?

Some 11/12 min miles for a few weeks wouldn’t hurt - it’ll feel unnatural and slow but it’s miles in the bank and rebuilding.

    Best of luck!

I don't speak from experience but thinking back to when I started running, the slow runs are what helped me. If you're getting out of breath and having to stop, you're going too fast.

    Perhaps try Couch to 5k?
