They were also rumoured to be original 50's parts that never got completed.   Not sure how true that is, the inlays are not right for a 50's guitar so the fretboards are certainly not older, I would be surprised if the rest was.  However  they are supposed to be solid mahogany bodies, not pancake style

Agree, it sounds fantastic. Player / amp help though. I’d still sound like me unfortunately…

I had the Epi version of this which sells for around £500. Great guitars.
I've really wanted one of those for ages. They seem to be either super rare and expensive, or when they do come up it's not a good time for me to buy! Could never justify the Gibson pricing though.

I had a reissue (my avatar picture) - it sounded great but I could not get on with the fretless wonder low profile frets.  I notice the spec for this new reissue is medium jumbo which doesn’t seem “authentic” but will be a lot more playable.  And way out of my price range!

    HOW MUCH?

You can buy a new Rickenbacker---who are pretty much the definition of "nice guitars, but they're taking the piss on the price, aren't they?"---for half of that.

Despite being complete aware of how this kind of market works---you charge what people will pay, and people will pay this---the whole thing leaves me scratching my head.

£6k? For a Les Paul? A solid body Les Paul? with a solid black finish at that? £6k? Piss off.

I'm a bit surprised that the price of this guitar, in particular, is causing such outrage.  Have you not noticed how much custom shop Gibsons (and Fenders for that matter) cost nowadays?  It's not exactly an outlier.

Totally get that. Sadly Fender and Gibson have long since moved from the instrument market and into the "rich man's toys" market. They can still get fucked at £6k for a solid-finish, solid-body, hard-tailed Les Paul though.

I think fender are still in the instrument making game, not so sure about Gibson. Sure Fender make some seriously costly stuff but the Mexican guitars are solid and good feeling instruments.

This particular LP does sound great, as all guitars do on Jack’s Peach demos but I’ll bet there are dozens of guitars at 20% of the cost that would sound similar enough to pass a blind test. So the reason to buy one has to be something more than tone.

Absolutely. The price of these Gibson's has nothing to do with tone, or work involved, its just about the economics of premium collectibles for rich people.

In comparison, £6k would get you one of Feline's 25th anniversary Les Pauls, which is handbuilt in the UK, comes with a quilted top, binding, bareknuckle pickups, a hiscox case, Earvana nut, a limited edition ThorpyFX pedal, and a week's all-inclusive in the Carribbean. For two.

Needless to say, if my lottery numbers come up next week it won't be Gibson getting my cash.

It wasn't long ago that the 50s Custom reissues were the same price as R8s. Now they're more expensive than R9s.

Just buy an Orville John Sykes (so you get an ebony board) and get it converted, all in about £1500

They were discontinued for a while when Gibson had problems sourcing ebony. When they were reintroduced, it was always in limited runs and for a much higher price. I believe the cost is put down to the ebony, but I imagine it's just the rarity value.

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

I bought a ‘68 Custom last year. RRP on that was £4300 ish (not what I paid as mine was B stock so reduced). That has a real ebony board and aside from the 100% hog body and pickups on the 54 it’s identical, so I don’t get the £6k price tag. It’s these prices that have pushed me towards player grade vintage stuff lately. Costs a lot less and is as good or better than CS stuff.

    Was the ‘73 ‘54 a pancake too?
I don't think so. I've never seen a stripped one, but a couple of friends of mine have owned these (different examples) and there was no tell-tale shrinkage line around the body, which you almost always get otherwise.

Both were good guitars but neither were as great as the original '56.

They're '72, not '73 by the way. Not sure if any ran over into the next year, it was a limited edition.
Yes, they ran into 73 as well, hence me saying 73 as a 72 might be a touch more expensive.

    Aren't reviews strange?

The guitar sounds absolutely fabulous in Jack's video. But couldn't that review be as much a review of whatever amp he is using? Or whatever pedal he adds in?

If it was, we'd be saying 'that amp/pedal sounds fabulous - I want one'. But it's a review of the guitar so that's what we all say sounds great.

    Crackers really...

I prefer it when they demo a guitar on a well known amp. Like when Seymour Duncan used to use a jcm800 with everything on half for their crunchy pickup sound samples . Everyone knows  what that sounds like so you’re better able to hear the difference in the pickups.
I agree with you, I don’t know if you’re hearing the guitar or the amp there .
although it does sound great !

Any Gibson experts out there know which years in the 1970s that the company produced the 54 reissues?

I tried one back in the late 70s, possibly 1977 at a little guitar show held iirc at the old Arundel Centre Inn in Southampton, near the Bargate. I fell in love with it immediately and have lusted after one ever since.
Interestingly, they also has a Travis Bean TB1000S at the same show that I got to play and that was mind-blowing.. so is another one on my bucket list.

I wonder if there are any older players on here from the Southampton area that went to that show?
