WezV - Offset DC Jnr build

What's Hot
I've been playing with the DC Junior shape in inkscape and have come up with this offset version with slightly tweaked horns.

Just cut out some templates for it on the laser

I think that has enough promise to take to a full build

I fancy doing something simple with the build, but might use this to play with some more zemaitis style stuff before I do a full Z style build.  An engraved metal plate, tweaked inlay shapes etc.

That looks really good. What about the headstock? Slightly offset too?

I'm not sure yet... I may even go 6 in line

Or I  often do a non symetrical 3 aside shape that would mirror the offset on the body... not used it for a few years, but might be time to bring it back

That looks really interesting.  What are you using for the neck and fingerboard?

I haven't decided on woods yet.  Not sure where to go natural mahogany or korina, or go for something painted

Found a bit of wood I thought I had lost, it was right at the bottom of a pile.

Its a nice clear bit of idigbo.  Should be lightweight, resonant, and have that nice korina colour when finished, rather than the olive colour some idigbo can have.

I'm going to cut a 20mm strip off before slicing up for a body, I'm hoping I can get a couple of neck lams from it for a 3 piece neck with contrasting mahogany center stripe.

It's marked out for a 25mm strip, so I have a bit of  room for error.  I've taken it from the edge that is closest to quartered

Great !    I’ve used Idigbo on quite a few builds now and found most of it to be superb for its resonance and weight

also its readily available in rough sawn 2” thick planks from various timber merchants at a good price

i don’t know why it doesnt get more use -
Paired with maple caps it makes excellent giitars IMO

looking forward to another of your builds @WezV.   They are always really interesting and I always learn loads from
    them.

    Thank you

Wood is now prepped.  I've gone for a 5 piece neck with idigbo, sapele and maple.   I have left the lams without a heel at the moment.  I think I'm going to add an idigbo heel and head plate front and back so the lams are only visible in the neck shaft.

I also rearranged the body on the rest of the idigbo.  The above pic shows horns together.  I flipped it so the tail end was together to give bookmatched grain on the end of the body

Quick play with my old headstock design.   I might tweak this to exactly match the other end of the body.

I've also extended the neck join on this drawing.

I don't know why, but I assumed the headstock would be offset the other way. Looks good as it is though.

Me too, but then when I actually tried to picture it, I couldn't make it work in my head.

I do have a pointier reverse version of that, but its a bit too metal for this I think.

I may offset it a bit differently though.

I don't know why but this project reminded me of the old Hamer Phantom guitars (Andy Summers was an advocate). VERY cool...

That is probably a bit more radical than I am aiming for.

I want to keep a vintage feel to this.

Yeah, I noticed that yesterday.   I was thinking about some contours or German carve and it started to look very similar.

This one will be left slab bodied and jnr style though.

Could go something Firebird-flavoured for the headstock?

That could work scaled down for a 6 a side headstock, but I think I'm sticking with 3 a side, and it would be hard to add firebird influence to that without taking it into Ivison territory

had a play with a slimmer but curvier headstock. I quite like the reverse version of this

I like how that plays with the back curve of the body. That's very nice.

i think i'm there.  Tweaked the curve from nut to bass tuners and changed the board for 22 frets slotted to the rule of 18 for  vintage fret spacing

Yep - thats the one.  Much better match to the body    Sense of forward motion in the overall shape.
