If the TB is Ice picky then change the input cap. So start with a 10n and go upwards from there. I prefer 10n to the 4.7n and again I think the later Brian May and Cornish ones use the 10n

if you put a switch in the input cap you can go from thin 4.7n to more bass at 10n to a much fuller sound with a 100n

For the radio. Keep leads short and put a 100pf or higher on the base and collector and that should solve the radio issue

A slightly different take....  I couldn't make the Treble Booster thing work for me the way I liked but I am chuffed to bits with my Drybell Unit67 pedal, which is a booster, upper mid-rangemaster, eq and compressor pedal in one. It's fab.

The Pete Thorn demo is excellent

That’s the one with a compressor as well?

    Yes.
It's honestly the best thing I've but before amps in that space and I've tried a bunch.
It has replaced comp+EQ+boost separate pedals on my board. I just use that and an overdrive pedal for solos now.

Referring back to the Beavis Treble Boost that's been mentioned, I built one a few years back. I've tried to attach a vero layout I did - it's nothing fancy, and bigger than it needs to be, but it's still tiny in a 1590B.

I did trial different capacitors for C1, and I'm not sure if I left it as 4.7n or not. I need to have a look for the pedal, because I remember thinking it was fairly noisy, and not really using it much afterwards.

Super easy to breadboard though, so worth playing around with.

I've been thinking I should get one of these for a while, seems like the perfect "always on" pedal. Shame the rangemaster isn't on its own footswitch to bring it in/out as another boost but still a cool sounding pedal.

Not sure on the green and are you looking for perf or vero ?
    Bitsbox is a good site

tagboard is another option. It’s fun to build on and this is a simple circuit

Perf. I know bitsbox (love it), but I don’t think they have those now.

Edit: I've visited the relevant section instead of searching for boards, and they do have exactly what I want. Amazing!

@Yorkie I fancy having a go at building one too, but I've only ever built a pedal from a kit. It would be great if you could post a few updates with pics of your build.

Full marks for Bitsbox. I’ve received my stuff a mere 21 hours after pressing the button.

The green perfboards look _excellent_ — way better than the orange ones I had lying around.

FuzzDog is very dependable. I remember that time when I had to replace a small 5K reverse log pot in a Box of Rock build... I got a replacement from Lee in 24h.

I've had a look at those Gapco enclosures; cheap and cheerful. Do they look like the Hammond originals, or are the curved corners a little bit different, etc? All my other handmade pedals are in Hammond cases, and I like 'sameness'.

Ok, silicon treble booster done. Sounds good, although due to time pressures I could only test it through a micro cube. Can’t wait to push the AC15 with it.

I have run it into the Vox AC15 for a few minutes this morning. Sounds pleasingly mids- and treble-rich, but there's very little volume on tap – I could not overdrive the normal channel, which usually gets there already at noon. Any idea what could be wrong? Disclaimer: I had to sub R3 for 122K (originally 120K) and R7 for 2.2K (originally 2.4K).

  • Did you build the Beavis schematic? I need to get mine out and see if it shares your issues, though I don't remember it struggling for volume. You definitely used a 2N5088? I think if I were looking to add volume I'd start by reducing R7. Maybe build the circuit again on a breadboard and try lower resistors in that place of the 2.4K - though you say you had to use 2.2K, so my thinking is perhaps wide of the mark.

Thanks! Yes, definitely a 2N5088. The circuit is still on the breadboard, so I can still tweak it easily.
One other thing I need to try is a different (ie not made by me) cable, because I don't remember having volume issues when I ran this into the Micro Cube with commercial cables.

  • Defintely worth checking with the commercial cables - could be as simple as that.

I once breadboarded a wah circuit, tested it, no sound, checked voltages, all seemed okay, still no sound. Took it all off the breadboard and started again, tested it, no sound, not even when bypassed. Then, it hit me - the volume knob on my guitar was set to '0'. A quick turn to 10 and there was glorious wah sounds.

They are pretty good for the price, I’ve had no issues, I do tend to go for powder coated 125b from Tayda now though.

Ok. Tested again with the commercial cables and there does seem to be a tad more signal. Brought the AC15 to the edge of breakup, then plugged the treble booster and played for half an hour until the battery died

What is a bit less clear to me is whether this sounds sufficiently different to the Top Boost channel on its own. Probably not :flushed:
