Another vote for feline guitars in Croydon. Excellent, prompt & honest service, top drawer quality and generally nice guys who always make time for you despite being worked off their feet.
I live in Croydon, what services do these guys do? Guitar or amp repair or both? Are their prices reasonable?
My trading feedback can be seen here - http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/58242/

Custom built guitars, repairs and occasional contributions to this forum.
Bit far for me but they have a top notch rep and some droolsome pictures of their builds on their site.

Hi -we can be found on here from time to time. Whilst we don't do any amp work our guitar services are pretty extensive. Price wise I'd say that our prices are fair/typical (so not cheap) but our work is always thorough and professional. We maintain a love and passion for guitars and this is reflected in our wanting to bring out the best in every guitar we see, no matter what pedigree or brand.

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.
Stockist of: Earvana & Graphtech nuts, Faber Tonepros & Gotoh hardware, Fatcat bridges. Highwood Saddles.

Pickups from BKP, Oil City & Monty's pickups.

Expert guitar repairs and upgrades - fretwork our speciality! www.felineguitars.com.  Facebook too!

Another recommendation for Leon of Grizzly Guitars in Hackney, East London. He just finished a first rate job of refretting my Goldtop Les Paul.

Another great bit of work from Paul_C who has built a baritone neck for me. Results are in the 'Guitars' forum over there. Bit further. That's it!

  • Max Cottam at Cottam Guitars in Leigh, Wigan. Done LOADS of work for me. I think he's a Les Paul "specialist" but there isn't a guitar I've handed to him that he can't sort. He's a legend and a fucking laugh as well.
    How very rock and roll

how come Exeter is "West"  and "South West"  ?

Youd need to add Brook in there somewhere, they take on repair work as well as making stuff

  • Hi sunshinewelly.

I just read your post so I thought I'd register and reply!

Dave Dearnaley in Splott, Cardiff (029 20462953) has done some superb setups including very good quality fret dressing for me.  He is highly respected by other which is why I went to him, and I did a lot of research before trusting my guitars with just anyone...  He also builds guitars. Well worth an internet search for reviews...  I can't compare him to anyone else as I have only ever had work done by him!  He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced (and looks like a wizard from Harry Potter!).  Very interesting guy.

Richard Meyrick is based near Usk and builds acoustics but works on electrics too.  I'd love to hear from someone who has used both Dave and Richard as I live closer to the latter...

    Good luck with your search.

    Best regards,

    David.

  • Anyone know of any decent techs in the cambridgeshire/ely area?

If not, I might wind up going all the way to Sudbury for the other recommendations, but I suspect I'll have my Tele and PRS builds done professionally - my jazzmaster has a crude shim and a terrible looking nut, though it plays well, sounds great and holds tune brilliantly... I would be ashamed to show it to a tech XD

    North West - I use Matt Ryan in Milnrow, Rochdale. http://www.guitarrepairer.com/ ;

He's done quite a few setups for me and he did a great job re-fretting a 1968 Levin acoustic for me a couple of years ago. Very amiable guy, helpful and reasonably price too.

  • Just like to say I had my Godin LGXT overhauled by David Kennett @ Flame Guitars. in Sutton, Surrey. This guitar needed the frets levelling and the intonation setting and the most important for me was getting the tremolo arm to return to normal and leave the strings in tune. I have to say I was amazed as to how badly a guitar can leave the factory and be set up by the guitar shop. This guitar is now not not dissimilar to my Les Paul custom in its action and has the chords sound like the American Fender Stratocaster that I also own and can compare with. This was a difficult job to do on a pristine 1 year old guitar that is my pride and joy.  I would not hesitate in recommending David also he kept the cost down which is very important these days.

And he only charges £60 for a full fret dress and setup.

  • I would really encourage people to learn how to setup their own guitars, to be honest it is not amazingly difficult and you can buy most of the stuff you need to do it for the cost of 1 pro setup.

Obviously thing like re-frets and repairs are a different kettle of fish.

Seeing as I'm a novice with a soldering iron I'd prefer to get my guitar rewired by a pro, however i have been quoted £75 which seems a bit steep to me? This would include all new components as well(pots, switch etc). The general price I keep reading is about £50...

I would do it myself but it's really not something I'd feel comfortable doing, I took one look at a Strat wiring diagram and nearly vomited.

I'm in the Cheshunt (Herts) and North London area.

Best quality parts will cost £35. A strat needs the strings off and refitted etc. I don't think that £75 is too bad a price.

Another +1 for Feline in Croydon & also when I lived in the East Mids Northworthy in Ashbourne Derbyshire. There a bit out of the way, but they did a respray on my old Ibanez & a Fret Dress on my Yamaha SG1300t back in the day. Very reasonable prices & were dead helpful. Their acoustic guitars are beautiful too.

  • big thumbs up for Dave Dearnaley Cardiff.

Took my jem there for a set up as it needed something more than what i can do - the guy is a wizard - his workshop is amazing - he builds his own extremely well respected guitars - he had a les paul on his wall which he was in the process of building which looked amazing (if you google his name you will see he built a guitar for Dave Grohl).

anyway he took a look at my guitar - looked down the neck when i was there and spotted the problem frets without me having to tell him. gave my guitar a light fret dress, sorted out the trem which needed a bit of work and now i have the best playing guitar i have ever felt.
