The Xotic is the best one I've used, it has a 15v mode too

I'd be interested to see how many actually put out 18v, and how many do 17.6v...

Mother of god, £60 for a charge pump... Errm, buy a proper 18v supply and keep the change!

    £60? Bloody hell.

The Diago ones are fine for things like drive pedals, although that link isn't working.  I'm not sure that it handles high current stuff though.

I've got a couple of the Diago ones, they work fine with drive pedals.

What is it you're looking at running at 18v Tim?

Hmm - think I'll just get another Isolator - pairing 2 of the 4 outputs will give 18v @180mA

Which suggests they're still using the MAX1044 chip rather than the ICL7660 or the LT1054. IIRC both are pin-for-pin replacements for about the same money but with much higher output capacity and switching speeds.

I'm also looking for a voltage doubler - ideally inline (charge pump) rather than Y-cable.  The tech specs for the pedal I'm powering say its maximum draw is 38mA - do you think I'd get away with the Diago?

If not, do you know of any products which use the higher-capacity ICs you mentioned?

'Fraid not. I used the ICL in the Valvesporker.

    Sorry for resurrecting this thread.

Anyone know of any other options? I had the Godlyke and it seems to have died on me this morning.

Unfortunately, you can't get the Godlyke ones anymore. I need a couple of hundred mA so the diago one (I've got one of those too) is no good.

    Gigrig doubler is £70!!!

When I google DC step up transformers there are a load on ebay for less than £10 and I'd be happy to solder the ends on, but I am guessing there might be something I'm missing.

    Any ideas?

For example, this seems to do the job for £4!

Yes, I looked at that one. Not 100% clear on their website, but it definitely does not do more than 100ma. I am looking for 250mA or so.

It seems that they all have very low current delivery.

Mine was £30 years ago. It does make certain drives sound a lot better. Especially the more overgained stuff

    Isolator won’t be 250 mA.

Could use all four outputs in a series/parallel arrangement.  =)

I guess so, although a bit pointless as it would be more effort and more expensive than just getting the doubler.

A Suhr Discovery delay. It requires 18v for some strange reason.

The only thing I can think off that does high current is the Mission Engineering 529M. But that needs 5V input with enough power. And it isn't cheap either.

It can deliver 3A / 60W max. But you need a 5V power supply that can deliver 60W as well.

I use it myself to power my Audio Kitchen Small trees with a powerbank. Wich is rated @ 12V / 1A. But for tube pedals you need to have double that power to start up properly.

It was a long search to find a battery powered solution for high current.

For 9V adapters you could look into the Gigrig doubler that delivers 18V / 500mA with a proper power supply.

    Thanks all.

I was hoping to avoid getting another 'device' and run it all off one socket.

I've ended up solving the problem another way as I remembered that I had a beefier power supply with an 18v tap at the back of the cupboard. All good.

However, it would still be good to work out a way to get a reasonable current at 18v without having to spend £60 on a gigrig doubler - which is basically the only thing on the market that will do it.

  • If you've got spare 9V outputs that can do the current, you could use two of them with a doubler cable:
