What do you play?

What's Hot
Since TTony kindly setup this wee section, I thought I'd ask the obvious question:
What other instruments do you play? (and do/have you ever gigged on them?)

My non-guitar instruments are:
Mandolin (gigged it a few times- our singer wanted to do Copperhead Road. I've also played a few folk jam nights, but I'm not that good).

Harmonica (I used to regularly join in a blues jam session, but I've never actually "gigged" as a harmonica player).

My main two instruments (is the ones I play properly) are:

Piano - have done proper concerts but also small scale local shows and stuff
Church organ - play every other week for a church, they've seemingly never noticed I'm not religious :)

Then I also try to play:
Guitar - have gigged but mostly home playing and recording for myself
Autoharp - have gigged this, there YouTube evidence!
Mandolin - only played at home
Bongo drums - random one that I picked up at High school and enjoyed
    Lap steel
Forgot Harmonica! have done a few Dylan songs with one

    I would like to play:
    Jazz clarinet
Double bass (but is too big)
    Drums

I have an electric piano in the flat but it doesn't get played much. Had lessons through school, so really should pick it up again.

I did grade 8 sax too, though I haven't kept that up. Can still get a tune out of one though.

I'd love a drumkit but that's not going to happen until we live in a barn :D

Ooh, and I have a slightly-fucked "vintage" brand mandolin that I bought 12 years ago, never got round to fixing up and has 12 year old strings on it. Really must get that sorted. Just needs a new bridge, nut and machineheads, but they're cheap for mandolins :)

  • Samba percussion, my main instrument is Tamborim which I can play to a good level.

I used to play piano but I haven't kept up my practicing.  I just use keyboards these days for inputting midi.

Bass guitar. This was actually my main instrument for years. I was a Jeff Berlin and Percy Jones disciple.
I played alto sax for a few years in the mids 1980s but could never breach the 'octave-barrier'

I have a collection of hand drums and other assorted percussive doodads and I've gigged as a percussionist in the past.

I'm into a lot of music using drones and so have a couple of interesting 'drone boxes' - an electronic tambura and a small Buddha Machine  - although they don't take much 'playing' skill.

Finally, I have a small balalaika. I've never gigged it but I do use it for recording occasionally, including on a recent Fretboard Composition Challenge.

[edit] I forgot to mention, I dabbled in sitar in the past but I sold that to fund the purchase of a Line6 DL4.

Guitar is my main instrument- been playing for 30 years.
Drums have been my obsession for the last few years- I'm on a mission with them.

I also play oboe (did grades), mandola, bass and I can get by on keys.

    Wish I could sing.
In my youth I dabbled with the violin but gave up when I outgrew it (3/4 size).

Acoustic guitar: fingerstyle with alt tunings so a different beast to my electric widdling
Bass guitar: have 4 I think these days
Keyboards: Played as a teen, used to learn songs, mostly improv around chords these days
Chapman stick: not played much in the past 8 years but I have Youtube evidence of past level.
Drums: terrible at these but it's something I do for recording.
Harmonica: I can get about 4 tunes out of one.

  • I played bass for half of my active gigging life. I bought a mandolin (inspired by Peter Buck of REM) and learned to play it to a reasonably low standard! Haven't touched it for a very long time. In my twenties I could juggle clubs (much harder than balls) quite well.

  • Bass is my main instrument.
I also play Octave Mandolin, mandolin, guitar and whistle in roughly that order of talent.

Mainly gigging on bass, but play the mandolin's and whistle more at home.

    Main is Guitar.

    In order of competency;
    Piano
    Bass
Drums - though this is very minimal competency, our drummer is teaching me at the moment.

Only ever gigged the guitar, but I've only played six gigs so far so think I can be forgiven. We have piano in some of our songs so that will be coming up soon!

    Vocals
    Bouzouki
    Accordion
    Some keys
And it would appear the Guiro too as I was the only one who could play it on a session!

Cajon is the instrument I'd love to get under my belt.

Main instrument is guitar, mostly electric with some acoustic.

In order of declining competence, I also play, or at least dabble in...

Bass (borderline crap, but they don't have frets, so that's a decent excuse).
Keyboards, mostly piano and organ, bit of mono synth (pretty crap).
Harmonica (pretty crap, although I can bend some notes).
    Tenor sax (crap).
    Clarinet (very crap).
Flute (even more crap, but sounds less offensive than clarinet).
Violin (fucking awful - I won't even inflict on myself, never mind some other sucker).

I don't really take them seriously compared to guitar. I think I realised that the dedication required to get to a good standard is beyond me now (in terms of whether I can be arsed). I'm quite happy just diddling about, picking out a few tunes or improvising. I find it quite interesting to take on a new instrument, but with the background of years of experience in music, rather than starting as a new musician. It's also enjoyable trying to play parts that I've written on the computer, not for the purpose of recording them, but just to play the real instrument that the part was written for.

I'm happy on keys as I started out playing keys before guitar. When I broke my hand a couple of years ago I switched to keys until my hand got better. I've done loads of gigs on bass but it's hard work, the notes are easier enough but my right hand tires on the faster stuff
I enjoy playing drums but never gigged as a drummer

I do a lot of gigs as a FOH sound engineer. I consider a modern desk an instrument, you learn it and you create a performance out of it
