Most kids grew up playing conkers at school until the government banned it .
    Are you thinking of clackers?

Fond memories of conker season as a kid!  Were they baked? Stored in vinegar? A winning kids conker was always suspicious and there would always be some sort of conker expert who'd butt in and give an unbiased opinion (usually an older kid who'd spend a few seconds examining it).

From memory there were different shapes to be wary of. Cheeser?

On a separate note there was also 'marble season' but fuck knows when that was, summer seems to ring a bell. The girls also played 'Jacks' at some point
Absolutely this ........the feared  'Cheesecutter ' and the old boil in Vinegar trick etc etc
    Of course, being the rotter that I am and complete cad ( I'm the sort of chap that would have been banned from the Casino in Monte Carlo for cheating at cards ) I had the answer to this ;
At age 10 or 11 I had the brainwave of taking a mould of my prize conker......casting a Plaster of Paris mould and then skinning the conker and glueing the shell around the Plaster of Paris mould .............it was an out and out winner
Many bags of Lemon Bon Bons and Peanut Brittle had been consumed by the time that my 'best friend' ratted me out !!!!!
How much 'kit' have you sold on tFB?

    :-)

    For the record, they didn't.

But as it's the Tories, we'll just say they did anyway.
It might have been Tony Blairs Labour government?
After all They were weapons of mass destruction if you soaked the conkers in malt vinegar for 24hours before you stringed them.
Some health and safety jobs worth did ban them in uk schools for children’s safety.
I think the only way to ensure a child's safety is to ban all the other children!

I'm pretty sure it was, I was at uni, and my child was at primary school in Southampton, I can distinctly remember being told and receiving letters telling and reminding me that playing conkers, and bringing conkers into schools was against the school rules due to health and safety, and was something that was taken very seriously.

spiders, according to the old wives tales

My mum used to leave them dotted around the house to keep away the spiders. She always has been a bit bonkers though.

I keep a few at either side of my front door, to keep out spiders, That's how I was told it works, or rather is meant to work.

It woz the EU what banned them along with bendy bananas. You can play conkers again now thanks to Brexit freedoms and sovereignty.

Got some great trees around me… last year, there was a great crop.  This year, it’s been disappointing.
and yet on a walk yesterday I came across 3 mature normal Chesnut trees .......I've never seen trees so laden with nuts

    Nope, no government bans.
From 2004, a reported pre-emptive PPE action to head off a possible ban by a local council (traditionally small 'c' conservative, highly risk averse & uninformed groups of people) https://www.theguardian.com/education/2004/oct/04/schools.uk1
    And in 2014 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-29519601
Now it's nut allergies being used as an excuse to ban them, even though they aren't technically nuts.
Allergies are possible, but are usually harmless to the vast majority of people. More ignorant overreactions. Sigh...

We could always ban Almonds on the basis of the cyanide content

Walked the dog early this morning at the park & picked up my first 3 conkers of the season.  Tbh I would love conker colour/shade of guitar, would a walnut body be the closest?
Don’t worry I left plenty for the kids who will go to the park later in the day!
