Guitars,Fashion,Cars, Interior Design,Skin Care, etc etc ......I NEVER pay any attention to 'Influencers '
UNLESS ...they have been on at least 3 episodes of Love Island
In which case their opinion /testimonial will be my life Mantra

I only buy stuff if KDH recommends it - which is never.

  • I don’t buy because of an influencer’s opinion,
we all have our own when it comes to tone,
but some ( not many) do a good job showcasing products comparing them to other similar products,
this has helped me sometimes to go a certain way,

But you have only been on two episodes

  • I don't trust "influencers" opinions, because they are, themselves, too heavily influenced by the need to generate revenue.

No, I'm right with you. We used to call them, "That smartass down the pub", but the internet has taken being "that smartass down the pub" into the industrial age.  It's no longer the cottage industry it used to be.  Now you go full smartass on thousands of people simultaneously, without even having to go to the pub

    Do you prefer "thought leader"?
"[Sporky] brings a certain vibe and dignity to the forum."

At least the word "influencer" warns me what to expect.

Influencer - 15 year old teeny bopper on Instagram or TikTok. They’re usually “influencing” other children.

I guess I find the word “influencer” a little odd, embarrassing and cringy given that its now applied, for example, to the likes of a 40 year old bloke doing a guitar demo on YouTube and brainwashing a 63 year old guy into buying a guitar/amp/pedal.

I've worked with some of the very big and very successful ones, not in musical instruments but rather in gaming where they are raking in obscene money.

The bubble they live in is insane but the pressure on them to continually pump out content and always be selling is utterly crazy. If they take a week off for holiday without having a backlog of work to publish while they are away they drop down the algorithm and their value to advertisers drops. It is incessant.

It's the real grifters  I have a problem with. The ones mentioned on here that ask for freebies and intend to do as little as possible for them.
My Trade Feedback Thread is here

Been uploading old tracks I recorded ages ago and hopefully some new noodles here.

They’re certainly some sort of virus

No, you certainly aren't. I really don't like it - and I'm not even sure exactly why it rubs me the wrong way.

However I don't begrudge them having employment - as I don't have to watch their videos or "content". But I am glad that there are regulations that require the presenter to disclose if they are being paid, in cash or in kind, or if they have a stake in what they're promoting

They used to call that 'grooming.'

“Guitar grooming” will do alright then.

Would Slash not be considered an influencer? Or James Hetfield?
No they wouldn't, not in the sense that "influencer" is being used here.

There's a thread about endorsements, but I guess you could have a third one about buying gear because someone you like/admire uses it, whether they officially endorse it or not.

...or is that yes they wouldn't?

Don’t we all have Victory amps because Lee Anderton lied and brainwashed us on his YouTube?

    No?
I'm considering one because if KDH's recent (paid?) promotion of them ;-)

I recently bought a Boss DS1 because that's what Kurt Cobain used, and I have a Rat because Graham Coxon used one. I also have a Shiflett Tele and a Gary Clark Casino. So yeah, I'm easily influenced I guess.
