Don’t bother with any of that amp stuff you mentioned, just get the Digitech Crossroads pedal straight to desk and you’re sorted.
Absolutely.  Oddly I'd just been reading an old review of it before I saw this thread.

I’ve seen him three times in the last 18 months; RAH in May 2022, Woking Leisure Centre ‘dry’ New Year’s Eve show (capacity about 1000 people) and RAH in May this year for the Jeff Beck Tribute. I was close to the front on each occasion and was surprised how much level was coming from his amp - much of what I was hearing was definitely from the back line, rather than the PA.

Though his sound wasn’t massively distorted, I reckon the power stage and speakers were being driven hard. At Woking there wasn’t even a wah pedal - it was guitar straight into the amp. The guts of the amps were built by Dumble incidentally - though they appear to be Tweed Fenders.

This is from the Beck Tribute show - EC’s tone is huge:

Wear glasses, use a compressor along with all the other stuff.

Wow what a compliment!!  I didn't realise you'd heard me play!!!

Personally I think the best sound he had was his 80s/90s Soldano and TC electronic rack gear.
Saw him in 89 on the Journeyman tour, the sound was awesome, plus lots of variation from song to sing, now we have the same tone + maybe the Leslie song after song after song.

Accurate or not, it was bloody funny.  Oddly enough, Clappo's voice is one of the things I like most about his music.  His playing is one of the things I like least :-)

<retreats as mass brawl breaks out>
I agree with this. I am no big Clapton fan, aside from a few outings with the 335 which are exceptional, but the thing I usually come away with after watching, is how good his singing is. I must have had some serious pre conceived notion many years ago that he couldn’t be a good vocalist, because I still feel a bit surprised, even after the 100th time of watching him sing really well.  =)

  • @WYNIR0 - that truly is the first comment on the fretboard that has disgusted me and made me call someone out. That is exactly the same as you loosing a son and me "Joking" that's how you get your guitar tone.

  • I asked this question months ago (Possibly years) and made this thread -
Diaz moded Fender low powered tweed twin 5E8a For Clapton - Amps Discussions on theFretBoard

I went into his amp specs in huge detail an it turns our he uses solid state rectifiers.
I saw cream in 2005 at the Royal Albert Hall and like you I couldn't believe the tone from just his strat going into his tweed amp.
I'm currently having someone build me an amp in the hope of getting this tone, watch this space!

I understand he uses the middle PUP. I have a CS 56 Strat that came with gold lace sensors and the boost circuit. I pretty much nailed the Clapton tone….but it wasn’t for me as I felt it sounded “plasticky” to my ears. Swapped the PUPs for 57/62s and normal Strat tone/volume configuration. With regards to the amps didn’t Denis Cornell build him a couple?

    That's a HPTT, not LP.

  • It seems that tour was actually 1994/5, but definitely Lace Sensors.

  • Two white Clapton Strats were sold at the Christie's sale in 1999. Both accompanying write-ups state that they were 'used on stage in the mid '90s'. Both have Lace Sensors.

Either way, you need a hot rodded tweed twin and a shit load of volume? After that, based on any sound clip of any gig you’ll be at the mercy of what the sound engineer wanted everyone to hear.. I’d have thought? But id say the volume is a massive factor, probably more so than the model of amp or pickups used.

Those 5F8A Twins are brutal and impossibly loud for the applications of us mere mortals. I made a short clip of one a while ago and ear plugs were essential.

  • Influential in the JB move to twins maybe? Always liked EC - Loved the Journeyman era. Soldanos FTW!

When Clapton started on the tweed thing his amps were modded by Dennis Cornell who then built some tweed
amps for him they were mid sounding amps with hemp speakers I believe Dennis would tell you the details.
As you know Fender then did some amps for him. His guitars do have a boost built in and I think these were
21db boost he also has a TBX tone control this gives a more p90 sound to his noiseless pickups. There is lots of
information available as other members have said.
As someone has said it's the way he plays that gives him the sound his attack and vibrato have a big effect on
his sound so it is really as many people have said sound is in your hands. But you can get near if that is what
      you want. Hope this helps.

Eric Clapton's amps are just a Fender Tweed Twin box with a Peavey Rage amp and a Mooer Green Mile built in, and that's the truth.

Am I right in summarising this thread as

OP - I bought all the Clapton gear but I still don't sound like Eric, what's gone wrong?

FORUM answer- buy some more Clapton branded gear...

    ?

    Close.

I bought all the Clapton gear but I still don't sound like Eric, what's gone wrong?

Answer - Don't worry about it because Clapton can't sing and he's a racist with some controversial opinions.

The type of pickups and the TBX control don't make much difference - the important factor is the 25dB mid boost circuit. That's *a lot*, and I suspect he often uses it full up, since apparently during the development of it, he kept asking for "more of the compressor" (as he referred to it).
