RIP - a maverick and a flawed genius. One of my heroes. Suppose it's a surprise he made it to the 80s really.

Great solo but even better with 2 or 3 of his mates, before they all fell out. Again.

Dead at 81 apparently. That’s really sad, felt like he was still going. RIP

    He made wonderful, wonderful music.

That CSN performance at Glastonbury has to be the best I've seen.

    RIP :'(

Possibly the best/most enjoyable gig I have ever had the fortune of going to was Crosby and Nash. Was always sad they had fallen out years later, because before they did, man I have never seen so much love on stage. RIP Croz, your beautiful voice will be missed but still cherished.

Amazing that his voice lasted as long as it did. Both it and he could have gone forty years ago.

    The music lives on.

Full respect and RIP…..David Crosby was a no-compromise music maker and one of a kind. Sad Day.

Fuck it. This is one of those that hurts.

I guess we're only going to see more of it, though.

    RIP Croz

Man, that caught me off guard. I'm a big fan of his music and last year bought all his output from over the past five years.
One of the songs even says " I've been thinking of dying and how to do it well"
Those albums are amazing, he was at the top of his game right to the end.
A very sad day indeed.  :'(

  • Definitely a one off, he'll be sadly missed, I was starting to believe he was immortal. I  now fear for Keith Richards.

Wow, gutted. RIP Croz. If I Could Only Remember My Name is definitely in my top 5 favourite albums, and so much other great output. One of the great characters from a golden era of music.

Was just listening to Deja Vu yesterday. Great harmonist and a real character.
    RIP.

As a side note I see the BBC news have screwed up, as usual, by putting Stephen Stills in The Hollies and Graham Nash in Buffalo Springfield. Does nobody ever proof read these things?

Wow! Shocked! I know he could’ve easily gone a long time ago, but still shocking.. made some beautiful music, and was quite a character.. RIP
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I'll be honest, I don't know his music at all. He had such an iconic look though. Always full of opinions as well!

I was surprised to read that average male age in the US is 74.5. Over there 81 would be a decent innings although in the UK average is just over 82.

A sad loss to the world of music.

    R.I.P.

CSN & CSNY were part of my music education during my teenage years.

    Absolutely this.

"Wooden Ships" is a terrifying masterpiece.

    RIP David.

I'm a big Byrds fan, but never really clicked with CSN(Y) - I think I don't like Graham Nash.

He was a total ass in the Byrds, but he was the fire to McGuinn's ice (I guess that makes Gene Clark lukewarm water?) which helped push them forwards.  His harmonies and great rhythm playing are all over a lot of music that I really love.

His post recovery biog is a good read, he was fast friends with Mama Cass, they were a wild pair.

Not a bad innings for a guy who lived the way he did. The type of abrasively egotistical character I'd loathe if I had to deal with them in real life but he could also be generous, perceptive and refreshingly honest and from a safe distance I found myself liking him.  I liked some stuff by The Byrds and CSN(Y) without being a big enough fan to really know how much of it was down to Crosby.

Always thought there was a kind of parable in the story of CSNY, all these competing egos in their heyday, each to some degree convinced they were the one who mattered, and then 3 of them had decades to process  the public having overwhelmingly decided that Neil was the one who mattered. I don't say that as a big Neil Young fan personally, I just found it fascinating how it played out.

I remember reading an interview with Stills where he was asked about the possibility of CSN touring again and he said they could only do it if Neil agreed: it read almost like a plea to Neil.  He said they could make big money if it was CSNY but if it was just CSN they couldn't make the numbers add up.  That had to sting given their early history where Stills thought it was basically his band.

Very sad.  A great singer and songwriter and, often, a wonderful human being.  He lived life to the full and probably enjoyed every minute of it.  RIP Croz.

Sky Arts just shown an old documentary about CSNY and so many songs I know even though I wouldn't say I knew much about Crosby at all. BBC 4 showing a short concert later (although nothing yet for Jeff Beck or Terry Hall that I've spotted, surely much more stuff in their archive).
But David was such a recognisable figure. The word hedonistic never far from his name so maybe a surprise he made it this far. RIP.

    Legend.

There isn't really any other word that does him justice.

    RIP :(

  • Any pointers as to where to start with Crosby?

I'm a big Neil Young fan and have (a couple of??) CSN(Y) compilations like "So Far" but never got any further than that. There's almost too much stuff.
