Welcome to the 21st Poopot's Cover Challenge

The winner of our last challenge @2003amxl has spoken and chosen our track for the letter H

Heartbreaker by Mariah Carey

That's right. Seeing as no other famous guitar based band has ever recorded a song called Heartbreaker it obviously has to be Maria ft Jay-Z

If that's not your bag then you can record any track starting with the letter H

But… if you cover the chosen track you will automatically receive a bonus 5pts as a head stat

RULES:

Entries to be sent in mp3 format to the following Email address:

covers@thefretboard.co.uk

Please comment in the thread when you've sent an entry.

You may wish to submit artwork to go with your entry. It brightens up the playlist and might subliminally get you more votes but it's not mandatory.

Entries close at 11.30pm on Friday  23rd December 2022... get onto it!!!!

A playlist of all the entries will also be posted below.

https://soundcloud.com/thefretboard/sets/poopots-cover-challenge-h

Vote for your top 3 with 5 points awarded  for first place, 3 points for second place and 1 point for third place. Entrants obviously aren't allowed to vote for their own entry. The winner has the honour of choosing the next track

Good luck!

    I will start if permitted, this is a cover of Hallelujah performed not by me but my wife on vocals and then @thecolourbox on keys/instruments. I put out a help wanted ad for this track back in Dec 2020 and Stuart duly responded. It was my first conversation with him and we went onto become good friends albeit never met in person sadly. He was always encouraging me to get involved so feels right to submit this one here

    I swore I’d never go back the day I hung up the wig and tight dress and quit the Mariah tribute act.

    Luckily I have a backup plan for the H round.

  • In an unexpected turn of events, I've managed to knock out two covers today (albeit one of them I'd done some of the midi stuff some time ago, so not entirely today :) )

    Although that does now mean I'm now on three entries (as i'm the piano on CMW335's entry), hopefully that's ok and makes up for all the ones I've missed before :)

    Walking over to my friend's house in the dark last night, I caught sight of a scrap of paper in the glow of a streetlamp bearing the word "POOPOTS". I thought it was a sign that I should record something for this contest. On closer inspection it was the packaging for cakes/doughnut-ty things called "POPDOTS", but I'll try to get something done anyway. (Also, I just googled the singular popdot and that is something quite different, lol!)

    I've feel into the same conundrum again. I've recorded all the parts for my entry, I am fairly happy with the results, however...I can't sing it. I just don't have the range.

    So my options at the moment are:
    1) leave it as it is, a kind of instrumental backing track (not really something I particularly like);
    2) Replace the vocals with a guitar track (again, not my cup of tea);
    3) Ask for someone's collaboration for the vocals

    Would 3) be a breach of the rules? And if not, would any of you be interested in providing the vocals?

    Other tracks have had guest singers on (Halleluyja is one).

    Ping me what the song is and i'll see if i could do it justice.
    Karma......

    Collaborations are absolutely fine. I would very much encourage it if it results in a better track.

    The only rule is that if you contribute to someone else's track then you can't vote for it

    That'll be 9 already and there's still nearly 2 months to go. Following my recent health problems, I think I may even be improved enough to start my own attempt this week.

    Sent one in.  I've had no time at all, and I'm going to have even less over the next two months so had to fart something out tonight ... but I feel guilty if I skip one so in it goes.

    It'll be really weird on judgement night but that kind of makes me smile too ... not that its intended to be "a competitor" like Rocky, more "filler" :)

    I've just asked this question over on the Composition Challenge. I'm curious about how people generate their artwork for these challenges.

     @flying_pie hopefully I won't derail the thread.

    Mostly I use Blender, which I did this time. Occasionally I use Inkscape and on rare occasions, if I'm editing a photo, I might use Gimp. Occcasionaly I might spend a small amount on an image from somewhere like CGTrader or a model from Turbosquid and edit it in Blender.

    It's not a competition.

  • I use a variety of approaches @stratman3142 ;:

    I might just use a photo of my own with app on my phone like Logo Maker Plus, or Snapseed if it's just a photo

    I might use Krita (similar to GIMP) for more complicated stuff. I generally can't be bothered drawing from scratch. In the case of Ghostbusters I intentionally made my masking really rough for comedy effect

    Lastly I might just borrow images off the net under fair use as it's non-commercial and usually parody

    Mine are either free svg clipart manipulated or assembled in Inkscape, or free photos retouched with GImp. My 'Goldfinger' entry was however based on an x-ray of my own left hand.

    Great topic @stratman3142! I either use https://www.pexels.com/ for royalty free stuff or an AI art generator like this one: https://www.wombo.art/create, the cover for this challenge came from Pexels and the cover for "G" was AI generated.
