Does anyone have any wisdom as to why I cannot access the fretboard on my phone via mobile internet, I can access everything else apart from this one site!;/

What do you see when trying to load the page? Can you try a different browser, does that work?

If a different browser works try clearing cookies and cache - Google for your browser & device.

Mine was out for a couple of days like this last week. Everything else was fine, just wouldn't load this site so it was a blank page apart from the www.thefretboard.co.uk at the top.

Although I'm not being logged out every 5 minutes viewing it on Safari anymore as it used to do.
I’ll handle this Violet, you take your three hour break.

It works on wifi and on another computer, however just via mobile via chrome, plus every other website opens fine, I cleared the settings a cache for chrome, and installed firefox and it does the same thing ...how odd

Yes, I wondered if the site was down or I was blocked but it seemed fine on other devices and after a couple of days it came back. No idea what happened.

    Exactly the same for me.

'Safari cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the server'.

Don't agree that it is necessarily a tfb issue if a small number of users experience the same symptoms. From here the page is served reliably on port 443 over TLS with a valid certificate. People having consistent bad results with different browsers on the same (mobile?) network connections smacks of connectivity / site blocking problems to me.

    www.thefretboard.co.uk unexpectedly closed the connection.

    Try:

    • Checking the connection
    ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED

That says to me its a site issue?

@Strangefan ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED can occur for many reasons besides problems at the webserver. Can anyone experiencing the problem post the output of `curl -vvv https://thefretboard.co.uk/` ?

One thing which could cause different "intermittent" issues could be clock drift. Normally phones get their time from the network. Could equally be a problem at the server end, but probably using NTP there. Always worth a check for this type of problem. The fact that the vast majority users are not seeing problems tends to point to the server being ok, but could potentially be either end...

No problem. I have probably been troubleshooting connectivity on the web for longer than most people on this site have been using it ;)

Sure. That's how the negotiation to upgrade to TLS (transport layer security, or "https") happens. Curl is a command line web-browsing tool often used to provide insight into what is happening under the hood. Running it in verbose mode (-vvv) gives you chapter and verse. For me it's working fine. The output from some device that's not working _might_ shed some light on why it's not working.

One Q for those experiencing problems - when did you last get updates on your device ?

I don’t know but not that long ago so maybe a few days before my ‘outage.’
It has changed my private browsing settings ( don’t ask) after updates before and that’s reset itself after a couple of days.

So if you've had recent updates, and applied them, and the time is correct on your device, then we've ruled out about 1% of the possible causes ;)

Are admins running fail2ban or any such adaptive blocker ?
Have network operators incorrectly configured some transparent proxy ?

Android users could install f-droid / termux and run the curl command (see exact syntax in my earlier pastebin link) to help troubleshoot further.

  • This sounds like a network problem. Virgin Mobile uses the Three cellular network...

0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom · Share on Twitter
  • The most obvious explanation is that there's something about the SSL cert we're using (or a cert in the chain) which is tripping up on the Three network.

I can verify that it's definitely working on EE and Vodafone.

I can't imagine that the site itself is explicitly blocked by their network - we're just not big enough for them to take notice. In the absence of another explanation, I'm going with that. However, I can't offer a fix, because I'm not about to buy another (more expensive) certificate for such a small use case. Sorry :(

TLS negotiation is between the server and the end device (it is designed to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks), so hard to see that a new certificate would fix it. It's a mystery for sure. Very unlikely to be a problem on the server end given the small number of reports, and the common factor of mobile devices on mobile networks.

If any affected fretboarders on Android could install f-droid / termux I'd be happy to talk them through providing more diagnostic information.
