How in Gods name do I play that!. Just as I thought I was starting to get the hang of this guitar lark, you come up with a chord that requires a spare hand and 10 minutes to fret it!  :#

You only need to play the "Green" notes, not the "Grey" notes on the fretboard diagram :)

Probably easier to play the grey ones  :)

For all those without a 1/4 size guitar to hand you  just might find this fingering easier!!!

The pic below shows a "BMaj add 11th", the notes are: B F# D# E

It has the same voicing as "CMaj add 11th", the difficult chord of the day.

    Or just x3x060 or 8xx060 for a two-finger version.

Without wishing to piss on your sandwich, apart from the improvement in the control of fretting fingers, what actual use is such a chord.  Give me a song where it is used.  Thanks.

Another nice sounding Lydian chord, this one has no 3rd.

Really it's just a stack of fifths with a Major third on top.

I've put it in F Lydian, so it has no sharps or flats and at the 13th fret, so it's easier to finger.

Have fun, they are nice sounding chords.

Another Lydian Chord with a bit of string skipping.

It's at the 13th fret for easier fingering.

Again, I've made it easier in F Lydian, so no sharps or flats.

A nice sounding chord for those lydian moments.

In Modal harmony, each mode contains a so-called characteristic note that helps to distinguish it from major and minor, and from the other modes.

In Aeolian it is the 6th note, so a good modal chord to use with this scale is one that includes this characteristic note.

Today's chord is a Gdom with an added 4th and no 5th, but with the 3rd. The 7th in the bass.

    Another nice sounding modern chord.

I accidentally found a nice sounding barre chord the other day, then worked out that it was ' D6 '

    X X 12 14 12 14

sounds quite good when moved further down the fretboard -

    X X  7  9  7  9

    X X  5  7  5  7   etc.

Surely the use is "it sounds nice", and if it sounds nice why not use it.  I'm certain there are plenty of songs using a <chord of choice>MajAdd11.

Here's a nice Melodic minor chord with the 5th in the bass, that works well with the Melodic minor scale.

The chord is shown in three positions on the fretboard.

This is one of my fav Quartal (4ths) chord voicings.

It's every 4th note from the D Dorian scale.

    1 2 3 4 5 6  7
    D E F G A B C

Then the DGCF chord is rearranged to CFGD, so it's an inversion of a Quartal chord.

It includes a 4th, a 9th and a fifth interval, which sound nice to my ears.

    Good point, the other chord's notes are: G C Eb B. :)

    A nice sounding EbMaj7#5

The 3rd mode of the C Melodic minor scale, the Eb Lydian Augmented sounds good with this chord.

Today's chord could have a few names, it could be a G/C slash chord inversion (GMaj with C in the bass), a GMaj add 11 inversion or depending on context, a CMaj7 add 9 no 3rd inversion.

This chord has a beautiful sound, IMHO.

I feel with some of these chords you'd need a root bass underneath to get the chord feeling stated as the chord name.
This one to me is a D dorian chord as without a third it doesn't have any grounding to C major and the 9 isn't stacked as a regular extension in the higher octave. (as far as my theory knowledge goes, I could be wrong).

Really enjoying this thread, thanks for taking your time to post and share your knowledge :)

I think I'm with you there, with no other context I think I would just hear that as D7#5

Yes, I agree, the CMaj add 9 no 3rd chord is very ambiguous and could have many uses, which I see as a good thing. The name depends on the context.

Inversions of GMaj/C is probably the easiest name, because the notes are GBD/C.

Here's a few more inversions of the CMaj add 9 no 3rd chord.

Here's some Lydian chord inversions, using FMaj7#4 with no 5th.

I'm omitting the 5th in the chord, because I feel it interferes with the Lydian's #4 sound.

This is my fav sounding Lydian FMaj7#4 chord.

I think it sounds good because the 3rd and 4th notes of the chord are next to each other and there's no 5th.

If a 5th was in the chord, it would interfere with the Lydian chord's character note 4th sound, IMHO.

The chord is shown in all positions on the fretboard diagram.

Here's a fourth voicing (Quartal), that's an inversion of the standard fourth type chord.

It's not very difficult to play and can easily be played as a shape moved along the fretboard.

The concept of inverting 4th voicings creates a more interesting sound (IMHO).

As an easier alternative to playing the shape at the 15th fret, you can play the shape starting on the "G" bassnote at the 3rd fret.
