I did once, because someone in the band brought along two 500w spotlights that they decided to shine up through my kit (I was drumming) and I couldn't see a thing.

Because of the spotlights and the shades I couldn't see anything beyond my kit so it felt like playing along to a backing track - weirdest gig ever.

I once wore some shades outdoors on a very sunny day, but they kept sliding down my nose so I had to take them off.

What on earth is a Goth country and Western band? Any listening suggestions??

  • I definitely have (to look 'cool', and not for any practical reason), but I used to be a massive twat. I'm still a bit of a twat, but I'm much more self conscious now so I wouldn't attempt it.

i don't know why some people really do not care to see someone else wearing shades inside. who fuckin cares! all the harsh stage lighting situations as described already is more than enough justification. on occasion, i've even donned shades as a gig punter coz the dolt on the light board is blasting me in the face with harsh light and giving me a migraine.

  • Old bands can look like bus stop queues. Put some shades and pork pie hat on to give the boozers something to look at.

Loads of times ...... the least coolest thing someone can do is worry about whether something is cool to do or not.

Agreed, it’s not as bad as someone wearing shorts on stage…  ;)

Low ceiling pubs with stage lighting is a recipe for a migraine. I don’t often wear them but sometimes it’s a better option than making yourself ill.

I need to wear reading glasses for playing with charts.  Up until now I've just been sticking on a pair of cheap Primark readers, because that's what I use for reading at home.  Having seen how naff they look on a recent video of a gig I think I'm going to invest in a couple of pairs of tinted aviator readers purely for gigs. I've worn "novelty" shades a la Bootsy on stage in the past but it was an exercise in obvious and deliberate bad taste.  This will be the first time I will look like I've actually joined the shades-on-stage-indoors set.  A bit naff, but the lesser of two evils.

As far as I'm concerned there will only be one style of sunglasses appropriate for rock & roll

Rayban Wayfarers then. I prefer Persols myself though.

And leather cowboy hats. In fact I've never seen one of those without a grey ponytail - are they sewn into the back of them?

  • I want to commend the restraint of Fretboarders for not posting pictures of Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.

(As opposed to people like me, who want to do the gag, but are too lazy to go and look for the pictures.)

  • I quite often wear sunglasses because it stops the stage lights dazzling me and also because sometimes I close my eyes when I'm singing and that make sme look weird.

In the early days I used to wear glasses and was very uncomfortable about my look, so very quickly started wearing contact lenses. But before I started wearing lenses I remember a gig at a local pub called the Salutation, I was about 17 and wanted to look cool, so took my glasses off and wore a pair of dark shades.
Unfortunately, a combination of no glasses, a dimly lit pub and a pair of dark shades meant I could not see a bloody thing. All I remember about the gig is struggling to even find my overdrive pedal…let alone my pint which always say on top my amp(yeah, not the best of idea’s).

    My mate did.

But he's a welder and he'd caught an arc earlier that day.
