Cheap running shoes?

What's Hot
EdGripEdGrip Frets: 736
Well, my old New Balance shoes are getting pretty damn moth-eaten now. I bought them back in the glory days of 2010, when TK Maxx used to have massive racks of heavily discounted running shoes in every size.

One can only assume that the shoe brands kicked up a fuss (HA, man, I'm just funny all the time) and prevented this from continuing; whatever, something changed and nowadays you're lucky if you can find one or two low-end running shoes in your size in TK Maxx.

SO. Where is everyone getting their heavily discounted running shoes from now?

Most online running shops have last years models discounted, but you'll still pay £40 or so for a decent pair I'd have thought.

I need to get a new pair if I end up doing the sprint-tri I agreed to next year.

Can't get cheaper than that :P

AFAIK if you want running shoes it's best to get the right ones and not the cheapest. But I'm a barefoot/minimalist shoe kind of person, so not best to ask.

  • I buy 90% of my shoes from sportsshoes.com

They've usually got some good offers on

As above, cheapest doesn't always equal best

Have noticed that the SportsDirect near to where I am currently sat are doing a specialist running shoes department now. I don't like SportsDirect as a shopping experience but they are generally cheap.
I’ll handle this Violet, you take your three hour break.

    Good suggestions, everyone!! :D

As much as I enjoy the smug calluses I've got from going barefoot around the house, garden, driveway and to the end of the road and back, it's not really a viable option for running on the lazily gravel-tarmac'd roads of mid Norfolk. I am reminded of Cody, the hippy half of the extreme-survival double act in the TV programme "Dual Survival", who is continuously pious about his barefoot lifestyle, and thus provides the very satisfying payoff every time he complains about sore feet or has to improvise a pair of sandals out of a car tyre because the ground is a bit too jaggy, no but bless.

I had a look at sportsshoes - prodirectrunning.com seems to have the best value option at the moment. I find Sports Direct are a bit obsessed with Karrimor (their own brand, I suspect - I certainly know I've NEVER seen a pair of Karrimor shoes sold at anything other than a heavily discounted "sale" price, anywhere, ever).

I just wish TK Maxx hadn't stopped. :(

I think I've found the best online contender so far, guys:

Yeah, I was looking through Amazon too. I find that when you're browsing clearance and end-of-line shoes, having a size filter is very useful.
I've got one pair of New Balance that have served me well and I love, and another pair that were a bit of a disaster. 50/50 record rate, there. I've ordered....

    ...hang on.

    a pair of these

    and a pair of these

I might not keep both, but hopefully I'll like at least one of the pairs.

My shoes don't cost anything to run, the car however......

There was something reached my attention recently (can't remember where) to the effect that running shoes cause you to damage your joints because they damp the direct contact and you put your feet down harder. The article said that old fashioned plimsoles encouraged you to run on your toes and cause less long term damage.

    Here - telegraph Article

    Wow. That's really interesting. Thanks.

I haven't actually owned anything plimsol-y for ages. I've sworn I will never own a pair of Converse, so time to get thinking...

Wait, I've got it! What you do is, you find a film shoot that have just finished a big party scene with lots of extras, then you rummage through the big shoe box and buy a new pair of running shoes for a fiver. BOOM

Karimor are an outdoors rucksack brand iirc. No idea who owns them but my Mrs has a pair and likes them. She's a 10k a day girl, but at 42 kilos hardly requires as much joint protection as I do.

Asics all the way for me. Check out Start Fitness. They usually run plenty of 10% email coupon offers and they tend to have lots of the old season stock. Loaded up with Asics Kayanos discounted from £110 to £35 a couple of years ago.

    Yeah.

My go to road shoe is GT21XX and my favourite race shoe is the DS Trainer.

I got Asics, can't beat em. Proper running shoe, not fashion/running crossover shite.
