Good thing he wasn't looking up Titus Andronicus, the filter would probably have been sending log reports to the police :-O.

I came across something like this when my daughter was researching a school project about the Vikings. The ContentBarrier software I have on her user login kept blocking things, and when I checked the log it was because of "racism". It puzzled me for a while until I did the same searches on my login (no ContentBarrier) and got a lot of Nazi stuff - eg "Thor's Hammer" was an SS regiment.

I had the same years ago. When I was trying to trace a customer and out in the word Essex , the filter saw EsSEX so it blocked it. I suppose a number of people would expect Essex to be blocked , but suppose if the customer was in Sussex he would be OK .

PS I'm allowed to make Essex jokes as I was born in and lived in Essex for 57 years and not ashamed of it  ;-)

I'm surprised BBC gets through filters.

Then there's this one I saw today:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23699681

It's all so lame. Only legitimate users get inconvenienced by this sort of thing - geeks and criminals sidestep it quite easily. Making ISPs do the leg work means the paying customers are charged extra for less. Stupid politicians.
    All practice and no theory

"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

    ^ LOL

that's also arguably a charitable interpretation of it. wasn't something leaked a while back (don't quote me on this, and also this is paraphrased) where it came out that cameron had asked the ISPs if there were some way they could implement something where it sounded like they were taking a tough stance on this but where they were actually doing very little?

I think they wanted ISPs to rebrand an "opt-in" filter as an "opt-out" filter, thereby satisfying the Daily Wail without actually doing anything.

The BBC report seems to be at cross-purposes - the "expert" says everything should be available from the British Library except banned books, while the Library implies the problem's in a 3rd-party supplied wifi link to the external web, and they're trying to keep gambling and porn off it to protect the kiddies - two different things, methinks...
