PRS Custom 24 - 2013 Experience Model
What's Hot
PRS Custom 24 (2013) Experience Model.
Owned for close to two years now. Gigged. Hands down, this is my favourite guitar which I'd choose over all others. Ergonomic perfection.
The story is that when I turned 30, after 15 years of practising, I thought I had better join a band.
First audition (which I passed, yay) was a nightmare though as my Ibanez went microphonic, it was immediately out of tune when I took it out of its case and after that day I said that I deserved something gig-worthy. (A list of previous gear can be read on my webiste).
So I played lots of guitars over a period of months. I'm a player and not a gear-hound so it was all about the feel (firstly) and sound for me - as well as reliability and all the usual. It came down to a Suhr Pro S4 or the PRS. PRS beat it - thicker sound and I preferred the neck shape, looks etc etc. I almost walked out of the shop without having tried it so goes to show.... try everything! The minute I played it, it was like a thunderbolt hit me. The neck feels like an old friend, like it's been played in for years. Very comfortable. Although I had a vague idea of what was what, when I researched it some more back home I found it had a lot of desirable features (the pickups, the neck, etc) - so it's not like I went in aiming to buy the most expensive guitar "just because" - it just turned out that it was one of the more expensive guitars and it was the best (for me). So a sort of half-blind test, if you will. It was so good that I spent more than double what I went in with.... And I don't regret it one bit. Some people said to wait for one second hand but I'd still be waiting to this day...
Most years PRS has an Experience event (and please anybody, correct me if I'm wrong on any points here... remember, I'm no gear hound) and does a special run of guitars. In 2013 they did these flame satin maple neck custom 24s with 57/08 pups (using the old Gibson wiring machines) and special "fade" flame colour on the body. Check out the blue one - it's stunning...
