So, since I'm now ampless my search has become quite critical!

Music i play is stoner/doom metal, so need an amp that has a thick sound with good bottom end, from experience that means EL34, 6L6 or KT66/88 type power tubes...but im not hung up on it.

The amp can be single channel or twin channel, depending on price and also how the dirt channel sounds. I get majority of dirt through fuzz pedals, but also use distortion at times...if i use pedals i stack a Fullboost and OCD.

I'm not gigging, this will be for home use, and i know its a lot of watts for home, but even at low volume i find a 50w amp sounds better that a smaller 5w amp...to my ears anyway.

Budget...max £450.

The amps that are I'm looking for are:
Marshall JCM800 50w (would consider combo)
Matamp (most likely out of my budget)
  Orange Rocker 30, TH30, AD30
Jet City JCA22H or the 50w (would have to mod)
  Laney AOR 30w or 50w

if you have something else let me know...also looking for a 1x12 cab

That is really tempting...i did have a HT5 in the past which i did like it, but thought it was a little stale, but the reviews of this sound really nice, maybe something to do with the EL34's. My only issue with it is that i am trying to downsize my gear and get a 1x12 cab, and this cab is quite big. Definitely not a no...but i will have to see what else i can find.

    thanks

Im willing to split and sell the head seperatly. The Series One is 100% valve, the HT5 is partly SS. Series one is a beast of an amp.

sorry...i meant the head is quite big and would probably overhang on the 1x12 cab. But yeah...still an option.

It's totally out of your budget but if you by any chance consider a Suhr Badger 30 single channel with el34s and power scaling, I m selling one here.

    Cheers

ok...you guys need to stop this...i know you know that we all suffer from the same chronic illness that is GAS...why you would torture one of your own when you know how bad it feels is beyond me!

    :D

  • How much were you allocating for the cab ?  The King Street (2xEL34)  has a matching (large) 1x12 as you see.   G12H30 in presently, should do your doom stuff rather well.

  • If it's any consolation, it's officially only 15watts.

    However, that's clean :)

I need something smaller now...so my jcm800 4104 2x12 could be had for £400... I'm near Durham, though...

  • I don't have one to offer, but hunt down a Laney - you could, for that money, get a TT combo or a VC combo, or an older AOR.

Also, I know I bang on about them, but the peavey bandit has a great doomy sound in it.  So if you're in for a bargain to 'see you through', they're common and cheaply had.

Also, I'll warn you, those Orange amps don't really do home volume very well.  But one that does is the Jim Root terror, which is a dark terror but doesn't sound like muddy-yet-fizzy shit.  :) It's a rockerverb esque preamp into a 15 watt power amp, and it sounds amazing.  Definitely worth looking into, I tried one through a 1x12 with a V30.

I know about the Bandits...i haven't ruled out the old solid states...but I've stumbled up a peavey ultra 60...which seems quite good...£250 starting bid...but looks like a massive amp.

I think the cab I'm getting with make this thing a bit of beast...Eminence swamp thang...and also in the future i may even get it modded with a depth knob...we'll see how it goes.

But I still have to get a cab...my new dilema is that this head is too big for a 1x12, the only 1x12 i can find is an ampeg one, which i will have to change the speaker out of...i may just get a 2x12 again.

  • Sold my Swamp Thangs too 'bassy' for me and you ain't going to get no cone distortion below 50watts. They might work for doom with the right pedals though.  Keep us posted.

  • What Are head dimensions ?

  • samzadgansamzadgan Frets: 1470
    its 63cm wide…wider than any 1x12 i can find.

i shouldn't have sold my 2x12…but anyway, i have this weekend with the amp and my 2x12 before i ship it off. So a few days to see if i like it…if so, i may get another 2x12….if not i will sell it and go back on the hunt.
