Just looking for some advice from fellow members please. I have an amp for sale on the forum and have a guy from Poland wanting to buy it. He's offering to transfer the money to my bank directly and says he will take care of the courier arrangements if I pack it up for him. Does this arrangement look ok or am I missing something?

direct transfer? should be fine. I've done this a couple of times to foreign parts. Just don't take PayPal

I've sold a few guitars to foreign buyers and I always insist on a bank transfer and only ship the guitar when the funds have cleared. Make sure that all the arrangements are documented in emails.

I had someone send me money via paypal once. It didn't seem quite right as the funds didn't clear straight away and he emailed me asking me to pay Western Union £200 shipping (UK - South Africa) granted he paid the extra £200 shipping cost :s long story short. I spoke to the post office and turns out my hunch was right. He has trying to scam me. He got a nice little email saying he had been rumbled. Obviously a friendly email...;)

If the money clears I see no issue though. Sold a 2x12 cab on here a while back and shipped to Slovakia I think. He sent the funds and sorted the courier with no issues at all.

  • Thanks everyone, I feel pretty confident about it now.

  • I would take photos of the packaging of the amp, and send it for "approval". If the buyer accepts, you're good to go.

Any "issues" that may then arise during transit are then firmly between the buyer and the courier.

Couriers are very quick to cite "insufficient packaging" when things go wrong, and you don't want to be embroiled in that sort of disagreement - particularly when the buyer is based overseas.

Hope it goes well for you :)

I recently sold something and posted to Finland.  Very easy - no problems and nice guy.  He used PPG.

Totally straightforward to E.U. country so long as you are fully paid before despatch

  • Sounds fine to me - I always video the item in use before I ship - quick demo, just in case it arrives and does not work, helps with both the recipient and the insurance company if you can prove it was working before you sent it.

I would always suggest pictures of the packing too. Also let the receiver know to keep the packaging if the package arrives damaged - many insurance companies will not pay out if they cannot see the packaging - it's a dick move but gets them out of paying (UPS, FedEX and DHL all do this).

Lastly do not under any circumstances take PayPal - they now have a 180 day return / complaint policy - yes 6 months - so if your stuff arrives and the buyer does not like it 5 months later they can still complain, which is just insane!

Its the safest way when shipping overseas, although do be aware it can sometimes be a phish for bank account details, you'd be wise to give them a number of an account with nothing in and one that can't go overdrawn if it turns out to be a scam.

They can set up direct debit repayments from your account with all the shipping/collection details and account numbers.
It was a classic Wonga trick, have the loan paid into an account, give them a different number/name for the payments!

Have him pay into your account and arrange the collection form a work name & address.

  • Check if he has a mate in the UK you can hand it over to once the cash clears. That way he can sort packaging, courier etc with his mate directly. Managed to sort a couple of "exports" successfully in this manner.

Any of the negative comments can be attributed to any uk buyers too. I live in Italy and have often bought second hand from the uk. A person to person phone call or via Skype can demonstrate that the gear works. But in most cases it's better to get a feel if the seller or buyer is genuine. Though I saved money I had to take everything to be repaired. Make clear there are no returns or give a week for a return, shipping at buyers expense. Tough love if you buy something broken. Should've bought it new from a shop or reliable dealer. Those are the risks you run buying used from privates.

I've sold a bit of gear that went abroad. A '74 Les Paul to Italy, a Mesa 4x12 to Lithuania and and a Mark V to the Republic. Maybe I was taking chances but I used took payment via PayPal and never had any issues.

However, I was offered my asking price on my Diezel Hagen tonight from a buyer in New York. He wanted free shipping, so it's a total non-starter.

  • My prospective buyer has started giving me stories of how I need to drop my price because he can't afford his motorbike insurance....
