SORTED: Valve combo for a mate... £300ish budget

Mornin' all,

So my band mate's amp died recently, and he's now on the lookout for another.
He's looking to make the step up to valve after using a couple of different solid state jobbies.

He has a budget of around £300ish, could probably go a bit higher for the right amp.
This will be used for loud rehearsals and gigs, so could probably do with being 30 watts or above.
No little 5 watt-ers please :)

Combos only!

He's reliant on a good clean tone as he primarily sticks to rhythm playing. Rarely uses any overdrive.
So I'm obviously thinking a Fender would be a good bet, or maybe a Vox... to be honest, anything with a nice clean channel would do the trick.

He's in Rishworth near Halifax, and I'm in Wigan near Manchester.
Either of us could pick it up.

So, what's available..?

Cheers,
Lew

Look out a Fender HRDX. I've just joined the club and it is a brilliant little amp.

Literally commented on that 1 minute before your reply @flyingv :D

    Think that would be ideal.
I have an 80s JCM800 2x12 that I use in the band, and that has lovely warm cleans with a touch of bite.

Never actually use them as I'm always playing driven, but if the 900 has similar cleans to mine, it'd be perfect.

I think Marshall cleans are a bit underrated, if you want that sort of sound.

    Nice and warm!

@Lewligan. Fantastic amp! I've had a couple in the past, head / cab and combo, love em! Lot of amp here for not a lot of money? And it looks in great condition too! Good luck!

Great amps @ChrisCox1994, had a couple myself... however, I think he could probably do with something a touch bigger to keep up with our ridiculously loud drummer :)

Vox ac15 - mine is just as loud as my old 40w blues deluxe. Great sound at any volume.

  • Yes what @gassage said! That's a brilliant deal. Not amazing amps but with a change of speakers you've got a good work horse

  • Hi mate, got a Peavey Classic 30 or a Laney VC30, both great valve amps. I'm based in Manchester City Centre near Northern Quarter

  • Also have a rehearsal room in the northern quarter you and your mate are welcome to try the amps in

  • Oh yeah, £250 for the Peavey, £200 for the Laney (the writing on the dials has rubbed off on the Laney, otherwise fine!) Sorry, really could've written all these comments on one single reply!

I have a vaporizer that I'm thinking of selling. It's 18 watts but I reckon it's loud enough for most situations.

I reckon if 15-20 watts is not loud enough to keep up with a drummer....then it's a new drummer you need not an louder amp.
