What sort of use does a 6th chord have? Fairly certain I've used them, but only as a normal chord with the 6th being a melody note.

In jazz harmony, it's resolved to from a maj7 chord. Just like a V7sus4 resolves to a V7 ( and a IImmaj7 resolves to a IIm7), so a Imaj7 resolves to a I6, e.g.

Also frequently used as a base chord in primitive jazz, ragtime and rock'n'roll harmony, e.g. Camptown Races. Try pretending you're playing the banjo with a C6 chord x35555 for "At Camptown Races they sing this song" and a G6 xx5453 for "Doo-dah, doo-dah"
