    Well its noon! times up.
The ability to tune a harp to the pentatonic scale is the musical equivalent of the invention of the wheel.
It is the cornerstone of musical development.
whatdya think of that then hey! Reading on, This is 4000 years before a standard pitch was decided on.

if noone had tensioned a string, Pythagorus would'nt have observed halfing the length created an octave and quartering it created a fifth... in which case there'd be no scales.

Musically the pentatonic scale is the equivalent of the wheel as it has no corners. ;)

This book says quartering it creates another octave. A third of the length creates the needed new note.

Are we talking about nodes or fretting?

    12th fret (half) octave.
    7th fret (quarter) fifth.
    24th fret (3/4) double octave.

Harmonics or pinging on a harp..
This fella goes on to say pythagoras got it wrong(concerning the 12 note scale not pentatonic.).
The musicians of the day new how to tune there instruments by using thicker or longer strings for the lower notes and adjusted the tension for the correct scale. What they didnt know was why(, ie You dont need theory to make good music etc so your absolutely correct on the point if no one tensioned a string etc.

7th fret isn't a quarter of anything relevant. It's the point that divides the total scale length into thirds.

  • So people have been jamming around with the pentatonic scale for 4,000 years?   And it's still being overkilled by legions of guitarists to this day(I'm guilty here too)?  Well, time to quote a song, "Are we not men, we are DEVO".

“Theory is something that is written down after the music has been made so we can explain it to others”– Levi Clay
