WEM ER15-gone

What's Hot

Short version-I've got a loud rumbling from the amp and the EL84s look like when they time travel in the Terminator films.

Long version-I had a WEM ER15 years ago and left it on for hours and it wouldnt work. SO I chucked it in the loft round about 2007 and forgot about it. I found it today and thought I would check it out so I can get it repaired by an expert assuming I need an output transformer. So I put a plug on it, fitted some valves and saw a blown fuse. I replaced it with a 3a house fuse so I could see if it worked and noise and sparks.

Anyone know what this is so I have an idea of how much it will cost to put right. The amp cost me £170. Also what is it worth? IE is it worth fixing?

Now you've put a 3A house fuse where there should have been something much lower value, all bets are off.

    Take it to a tech.

It's going to a tech anyway I dont want to kill myslef. I used the house fuse to check if I had power. I'm not going to run it like this.

Now you know - yes, you have power, and no, the amp didn't want it.  :P

Even though you were only using the 3a fuse for a quick test, the chances are a lower value fuse would have blown before lightning started coming out the valves! Instead the fuse didn't blow, electricity arcing inside valves, probably damaged more things.

I'll find a tech and sees what he says I'll probably remove the house fuse first.

If you don't want to kill yourself you shouldn't fit the wrong fuses.

The purpose of the fuse is to protect the rest of the amp if something like a valve fails. If you use a value which is far too large, all you've done is remove the protection and probably blown something more serious than was originally wrong with it - and caused a risk of a fire or the casing becoming live, if it's not fully earthed.

It's still probably repairable for less than the value of the amp, but if it's the power transformer that's blown, plus whatever fault was the cause of the original fuse blowing, it might be a close call.

I might just junk it anyway. I got a lot of use and some Mullard tubes out of it, so I'll call it quits.
