Looking for a high end Amp..

What's Hot
Si_Si_ Frets: 384
Since I've sold my AxeFX I'm on the lookout for a replacement. not exactly sure what I fancy, but not after a standard Marshall (unless it's from 1971). Anything american sounding would be good.. Soldano, Mesa Mark V etc..

Cash waiting for anything that interests me.. Please post pictures if you have them.

    Hi Si,

I have followed your recent posts/sales etc re your quest for the ultimate head.

You have mentioned all the usual suspects but I'm surprised that you have not

considered the CAA PT100 I have for sale currently - tone & voicing is definately

a personal preferenec but this is the best channel switcher

currently available IMHO and I've been through Bogners/Boogies etc.

Friedman is also on my list but it wont hang with the PT100's clean which is the

    benchmark.

Happy to talk further if you wish !

    Cheers,

    Graeme

  • Understood Si, I just thought it might be do-able as you were already spending in the £1800

bracket on the standard issue Mark V Boogie and your not that far away having sold off your

    entire Axe rig....it is a £3000 custom spec'd amp !

Yea, it's lovely I admit :) but the price on the Mark V was at the very extreme of my budget.

I get that Si - I hope you find an amp that is all you want it to be.

If you change your mind, I'll be around

Not necessarily "High Gain" but defiantly not clean.. think of 80s-90s rock..

Why specifically a 71 Marshall head? Is that year of amp a particularly good one? I dont know a great deal about Marshalls.

I just happen to know someone with a 1971 50w Lead head ;)

  • Just 'cos I spotted it the other day...

Other than that, keep an eye out for a Soldano Decatone - all three traditional Soldano channels in one amp.

You should checkout the Satriani JVM; it's quite different to the original. Or go and buy a EVHIII, those are class. Failing that, Laney VH or Ironheart. I don't think you need to fall for the "more money == better tone" fallacy. Shit... even a Jet City amp would get you there!!

I always liked my JCM20h.. I was burnt by 2 JVMs, not sure I'd go for a 3rd, even the Satch version. Defo will consider an EVH 5150 though..

American? Not sure what you mean, e.g. my spare Matchless Independence does 80s/80s rock, but is not like a Soldano

Anyway, Soldano, Mesa, etc  - there must be a few of those going at good prices used at the minute? I've seen lots of very cheap Mesas over the last year or two, although everyone warns me off them because of reliability issues (2 or 3 amp specialists and the guys in the store where one was on sale). I'd use pedals for heavily OD'd sounds now tbh, some of the latest designs are very satisfying

You could buy a Trainwreck clone.

  • Just get an EVH. Ive had most of the big hitters, mark v, bogners, SLO. The EVH is the only one that sounds exactly the same every time you switch it on. No tweaking means you can get on with the business of playing guitar. Plus it sounds awesome!

Yeah, sorry about the Boogie, Si.

Can't believe someone sniped the auction. It was only online about 2hrs.

Best of luck in your search mate.

Incidentally, there's a nice Soldano on the bay at the minute. Looks clean. Might be worth a go?
And a couple of Ecstasys as well.

    :)
