Do the assembled gentlemen recognise this and should I be sourcing a pair of new 6L6's?

    Yes, and no.

    Beautiful blue glow!

Ignore anything you may have read about this type of glow being a sign of bad valves, it's the exact opposite. I really have no idea where that myth came from.

I probably should have said that it doesn't guarantee the valves are good - there can be other problems that don't show - just that by itself it indicates a valve with a good vacuum that's working correctly. The blue glow is actually caused by fluorescent minerals in the glass being bombarded by stray electrons.

There is also a fainter blue glow inside the plate structure which indicates a tiny amount of gas in the valve and is also normal, but if it's excessive it can mean there's a problem.

Pink or purple glow is always a problem and usually means the valve has seconds to live!

  • Yep, I concur...

Get a pair of Chinese KT66 and watch a miniature version of the northern lights.

I shouldn't worry, but I'd always have a spare set to hand.

Thanks @Van_Hayden, i'm going to get a set just in case. They've been in the amp since I purchased it 2nd hand (and I believe from new) so it's worth having a set in stock :-)

Aye. Some blueness is fine. It's when they're boiling red that you've gotta watch out!!
