East London.. hmm there was a bloke I knew that moved to the Channel Islands but thats no good.

The other fella I know of is Bob who trades as Zeitgeist who is based in Brentwood. A few of us on here have used him before.

He also does work for the PMT in Romford.. or he always used to.

I've had a couple of my guitars in with him and he is decent.

My two go to's are Bob or Feline in Croydon if I can make the journey.

The only easy day, was yesterday...

It's Leon from Grizzly Guitars that went to the Channel Islands, I used to take my guitars to him...

Even though Feline are only 12miles from me, being London it's a 2.5/3 hr round trip by public transport.....
I will prolly take my guitars somewhere in the West End

I can def suggest one to avoid, though as I’m not sure the forum-decorum on naming-and-shaming, so I’ll keep it slightly vague, just in case its inappropriate…!
there was a tech that worked out of Hackney Wick a couple of years ago, unsure if he’s still there, who snapped off a tremolo claw screw in a masterbuilt strat, whilst doing a setup that involved decking the tremolo.
He then left the snapped screw in the body, and put in a second screw, at a crazy angle, and didn’t mention any of it!

Maybe the London Overground is a useful connection to Croydon from East london

I live in Nottingham. Any serious work goes to @FelineGuitars the more trivial stuff I take to Tim Marten on Charing Cross road.

That's still a 2.5-3 hour return trip, depending on where in East London he is, and he would have to make the journey twice.

I get the pain, took me a good 2-hour return trip every time I came to you and I live in SE London. I honestly hate any sort of London commute, it's so stressful no matter the means of transportation.

John at String King Guitar Works has done some stellar work on a number of my guitars, and he's based in Woolwich (SE18 5NR) and his website is stringkingworks.co.uk

He's fixed a broken headstock on my Casino, sorted out the tricky 5-way switch rewiring of my Fender JD Telecaster, re-freted my Rickenbacker and completed a brilliant nitro finish on my Custom Tele, so not much it seems is beyond his skills.

With so many comparison web sites out there, how do I choose the best one?

Might be a one off, but I had a not so great experience. Seems like a great guy though, and his comms are excellent.

I'm in E9 Victoria  Park.... at the moment it' seems Phillippe Dubrille in Camden Parkway might be my easiest option...
    Thanks everyone

  • Hopefully this is helpful if you’re still looking, I’m based near you. I recommend Joe Dobson at Joseph Kaye Guitars in Hackney, N1. Does really great work. He’s done everything from nuts and pickup installations to full nitro refinishes for me.

He has some interesting 'thoughts' under the process page.

Nitrocellulose lacquer is an indication of a good sounding guitar. It allows the wood to vibrate and therefore, sound better. The process takes weeks to apply, as opposed to modern polyurethane lacquers that were developed in the late 60s. Poly-based lacquers, however, compress the wood and constrict the acoustic value of some of the best tone woods.

Synthetic modern glues that are often used to make modern guitars have their drawbacks: they produce a vibration barrier between the wood surfaces. The guitars of the 50s and mid-60s were bound with hide glue. This natural glue that will soak into pieces of wood and as the water dries, binds them together. This allows all the wood elements of a guitar to talk to one another without any vibration loss.
