External FX loop pedal or a line shifter

Been playing around with more ambient effects like delays and reverbs with my Marshall DSL5 amp, but I think the FX loop on it is rubbish as its passive and mismatches impedances from pedals. They sound quieter and very muddy in the loop. Have tried it in front but it sounds just as bad. I'm having to use a compressor after the last effect in the loop to boost the signal but it makes it quite noisy and colours the sound too much I feel.

Is there any separate FX loop pedals or boxes I can use so I don't have to use the amp's one?

I think the Moorley line shifter does some kind of job matching impedances?

Also another brand called Ceritone does something similar.
