Sore fingers after a three week break

Just come back from three weeks away.

Fantastic holiday but trying to play guitar hurts like it did when I was a beginner! Really sore after about half an hour.

Got two gigs this weekend, not sure my fingers will have hardened by then. Could be painful.

Any finger tip hardening suggestions? I’m trying the “little and often” approach at the mo but three days in it’s still unpleasant.

  • If it gets to the day of the gig and you are still struggling, put a little superglue on your fingertips.

And make sure it's dry before touching anything.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • Stretch exercises before playing. I had tightness in my fingers when coming back from holiday. Took a while to get rid of it.

  • I’d suggest keep playing regularly. Feeling sore should be fine, even if it starts to feel unpleasant, but stop if it feels painful. Hopefully, it won’t feel as bad by the time of your gigs.

As a stopgap for this weekend, Rock Tips liquid callus.  Like superglue but more flexible and resilient (superglue is irritating and cracks easily).

Over the longer term, what you’re doing - playing little and often, building it up - is the best approach.

  • Lighter gauge strings and as much practice as possible before the gig. I had about a month off I the summer and came back to two gigs. 1st half of the set with a guitar on 9’s. Second half on 10’s.

Buy a bottle of surgical spirit and pour some into something like and old henna tub with a screw top as it will last for ages.
just hold your fingers in the surgical spirt for about five or six minutes then dry off with some tissue.
don't play guitar after this as it will dull your strings. Your fingers will harden up in two to three day.
Eric Clapton did the same but added witch hazel but I just use the surgical spirit. Good luck.

Thanks chaps. Trying surgical spirit and a little and often playing approach.

Rehearsal tonight so I’ll see how I go!
