At the moment I'm looking for Watson, SS2, Vintage S, T62, Vanguard.
Please drop me a message.
Harder to find and a little bit more expensive is a Fender Showmaster Stratocaster.
There a loads of basses with through neck, but very few guitars with the same design.
My silver sky doesn't seem any harder to play up high than my Mira ( bolted Vs glued necks)

I am not advocating playing at the dusty end, mind.
In answer to the original question, a used Ibanez RGAT might fit in budget.
I was wondering how long it would take for Ibanez and Washburn to be mentioned
£399 seems about the going rate but It looks fab (buy it before I weaken, and I do not like floyds but i'd have that all day and twice on a sunday)
and that If you fancy active EMG's
They where my first thought as well, and like you don't think they do one in the OP's price range, or one could be bought second hand in the OP's price range.
Those 2 things aside mine is great, the neck is lovely.
