If you could have one new piece of studio equipment

What's Hot
What would it be right now? I think it would be a Minimoog for me currently.

Probably a Yamaha YC73 stage keyboard, I have fancied one for quite a while, but other things have cropped up which are more important

Is this just an excuse to list fancy shiny? I'll over analyse the title and also say computer - I'm quite happy to have an older minimoog, YC73, ms-20 and let's dump in the old roland x0x boxes...

Also older microphones and preamps will do in a pinch  ;)

Still, I'd love a dry / rehersal  room, to be as loud as a drumkit plus instruments. So I'll make that my serious, unobtainable, answer.

A full modular thingy, that I'd initially be frightened of, then progress through anger into seething resentment that I can't even turn it on, let alone make anything useful emerge from it.

  • Having my room soundproofed and treated would be nice. For everyone involved, frankly.

Or perhaps Rick Rubin if he's not available to live in my wee studio

  • Soundproofing/treatment would be wonderful. Ah to be able to do anything at volume. My M1 mini is holding up pretty well but once the M3 Pros are around, those are going to look awfully attractive.

  • Boring but also unobtainable answer: a decent live room, capable of sounding good whilst comfortably accommodating 16 piece jazz bands.

More realistic (although still probably too frivolous for right now), these cute new pocket ribbon mics from Extinct Audio

    https://www.extinctaudio.co.uk/product/borbon-pocket-ribbon-microphone/

Seriously though, have you seen them? 8cm tall! I know people who've heard them in person and are nothing but complimentary, say they sound way bigger than they look, as you'd expect from Extinct Audio/Xaudia.

I just spend a month doing Pro Tools certification on an Avid S6.
I would love to have one of those.
    But they are £80k.

I will have to be content with a Dock and a pair of S1's.

80k is surprising for a control surface. Second hand Genesys Bkack and Duality consoles are that ballpark.

People misunderstand what an S6 is.
You really need to spend time with it to appreciate how much of a beast it is.
    Totally worth it.

I've had a lot of time on Duality and Genesys consoles.
I'd take an S6 over either in a heartbeat, esp working in audio post and immersive/Atmos.

That's really interesting! I'd never have guessed and clearly don't have experience with one. I'd be glad to spend real time on any of those.

    No worries.
It is a common attitude and one I held myself until recently.

The problem with analogue consoles is recall.
You can do it but it isn't like opening a 300 track session in Pro Tools and instantly having access to everything.

With a Duality it can take an hour to fully recall all the settings on the desk.
Also, what do if you need immersive audio?
Duality supports (and the bus compressor is in) 5:1 but if you are working 7.1.4 or 9.1.6 you are kinda stuffed.

The S6 (and all Eucon surfaces) work with 2 DAWs or workstations at once so you can have Media Composer (AVID's video editor) and Pro Tools locked for film mixes on a dubbing stage. Or Logic and Pro Tools locked together if you are a composer who writes in Logic and mixes in Pro Tools (very common workflow- I work this way as do a number of film, TV & game composers).

The configurations are endless and the workflow is fantastic.
    It is very, very slick.

I love the Duality- when I worked at SSL I would try to spend most of my lunch hours in the Duality room.
But if I was looking for a large format console right now the only one I'd be looking seriously at is the RND 5088.
Seriously spendy and not remotely suited to audio post production workflows.
If I had a two room complex with a share live room I'd have an S6 in the audio post room and a 5088 in the music mixing room and then never leave the studio.

But alas, that isnt my reality and when you need to be flitting between 5 different sessions a day then a Eucon surface is the only thing that makes sense to me. I've had the dock for the last 3 years and looking at the S4 but they are still hella expensive an 8 channel system is £25k versus a Dock and S1 plus 2 iPads for under 5k.
You don't have nearly as much configurability but for most of what I do it is probably ok.

I wish Avid did a 10k controller/console- 24 faders, 48 knobs, master section. I'd be all over it.

Even though my room isn’t treated or soundproofed I would just love to hear PMC6‑2 studio monitors: https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/pmc6-2 after watching a YouTube studio tour & the producer/musician saying how much he loved them after his producer friend recommended them to him.

    I love the SoundOnSound review:

The fairly minimal kit in my music room is really all I need but I would love a larger space, preferably big enough to accommodate an entire band!
