UNPLANNED DOWNTIME: 12th Oct 23:45
One of the finest acoustic bassists ever, jazz legend Richard Davis died September 6th after a long illness. He was 93 and had been in a hospice for nearly 2 years.
A great, great bassist who played or performed with composers and musicians as diverse as Stravinsky, Bernstein, Stokowski, Boulez, Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Springsteen, Van Morrison (bass on "Astral Weeks"), Pharoah Sanders, Pat Martino, Janis Ian, Stan Getz and many, many more. His own solo recordings varied from standards to 'free' jazz. His playing on Chico Hamilton's "The Dealer" and the album "Heavy Sounds", which he made with Elvin Jones, is absolutely magisterial; he had an unique sound and style.
