Strap Locks

What's Hot
I have been using Grolsch bottle seals for strap locks but am considering getting a set of proper strap locks for my Duesenberg. Will any strap locks be suitable and, if I do get some, is it a simple process of replacing the existing strap buttons with the supplied ones (with the strap locks) or is it not so simple?

You could get Duesenberg's own design, which are rather nice:

  • Grolsch washers *are* proper straplocks as far as I'm concerned. I used to use Schaller on everything but woudln't go back to them. The only annoyance with the rubber washers is taking chunky straps off Gibsons to fit them in hardcases when you're in a hurry

  • Those Duesy ones look quite neat to be fair. Like a far better implementation of the Gretsch ones. But still a faff to get on & off in a hurry, presumably

Yeah, I assume they're best for those who leave their straps semi-permanently attached to their guitars.  And you'd have to develop a habit of checking they're tightened, although I guess the button itself would hold the strap in an emergency.  But I like the design, simple and elegant.

  • I suspect this has been asked before, but where could you get suitable Grolsch type washers?

I ask as someone who doesn't drink...

Are these OK? They look a bit 'tough' to me.

  • I got some from Amazon once with the term 'Grolsch Type Spare Washers'...they were...erm...'Grolsch washer' orange.

I subsequently got some black ones which look a lot better but I can't track down the receipt email.

Might have been from a home brew supplier.

  • Do strap locks (not the rubber washer type) allow you to easily remove a strap when putting the guitar in the case? If not, perhaps I'm best sticking with what I have

Schallers or Dunlops are easily removed.  Other types, not so much.

  • I would avoid Schallers. The lock mechanism is fine but the thread on the screw is so bloody small it's mad! That and if you forget your strap there isn't much to hang a normal strap on to.   My personal preference is the Dunlop Dual design, because it solves both of those problems.  That said, those Duesenberg ones look sick

I have a couple of sets and they generally work quite well.

Only issue I had is when I  overtightened one and it started unscrewing the whole strap button .

The Schaller button works very well with the Dunlop rotary plastic locks - they're a perfect size and the square edge of the underside of the notch makes it very secure. I don't like the new Schallers with the screw as part of the button though, only the old type with a separate screw, which you can use longer ones of if you want, or fatter ones if you turn down the head size to fit.

I've never found Grolsch washers that secure - you can pull them off if you twist the strap. OK as a backup in an emergency but I stopped relying on them for normal use after I managed to twist one off and nearly dropped the guitar.

I have schallers on my 1990 LP Custom because of weight and value, and 1988 Fender Telecaster Standard because these were on it when I bought it. Very secure and very easy to remove the strap.

For most of my other guitars I use the Grolsch rubber strap locks for convenience and because they are a great inexpensive and effective strap lock solution.

I’ve used these for years .
They are exactly the same as more expensive branded versions.
I normally get the mixed bag of 6 red & 6 black.
