Almost did a deal locally he wanted my Player Plus Strat and I would take his 09 Mex Standard Tele in px, the Tele had a Maple neck, med jumbos and rolled fretboard edge. The owner of the Tele had someone else coming to view the guitar arranged before we made contact and it was only fair to honour it. Sods Law it sold, so now Im looking for similar
Did all Standard Teles come with Med Jumbos and Rolled fretboards or did he get lucky?
Which model Tele should I look out for (I could also just source a neck and build my own around it) but am blissfully ignorant on Tele specs.

Cheers!

Not sure on which mexi teles have rolled edges: I've had a couple of mexis and none of them did. Plus I believe it would be dificult to DIY it as it can crack the finish on a maple board.

I know american specials / performers have jumbo frets, and the strat version I had definitely had rolled edges; it was a dream to play. Maybe the US special tele's are rolled as well; obviously not mexican but they're considered the cheaper end of the US Fenders.

  • It is the Player Plus series that have the rolled fingerboard edges along with a 12" radius. You can buy the necks separately too.

Player Plus wasn't around in 09.

Thanks I wonder if the Tele in question got a “lucky accident” neck

I cant seem to find any ref from the serial number

I think I will probably buy a Player Plus neck, then source a body and I have most it not all the hardware to make my own spec

Rolling the fingerboard edge is a very simple task. I do it using an old wooden handled screw driver. Lightly press and roll the handle along the edges for a more worn in feel.
Just repeat until it feels right for you.

Have you done it on a maple fretboard?

  • Serial number makes it a 1995… my first Tele was a ‘94 Mexican Standard, which despite the ceramic bar magnet pickups, veneered body and toploading bridge, was a very nice playing and sounding guitar. I can’t remember if it had rolled fretboard edges, but I often regret selling it. I got it used in a shop for Squier money - £225!

If it's just an MIM Standard then no way did it originally have rolled edges, someone must have done it as a modification.

I wasn't aware of any MIM models with rolled edges, but the Player Plus has been mentioned above.

My 1999 MIM powerhouse strat has a rolled edge fret board if that helps. It is the deluxe series, sounds wonderful.

The road worn Series does as does the Player Plus. Short of those two you're looking at either well played in Guitars, a freak happy accident with the CNC machine, user rolled edges (such as the screwdriver trick - as said before - not on a finish maple neck ffs) or some far flung model I've not heard of.

Ah yes, I didn't think of Road Worn.  I owned one for a short while and don't remember it very well, but it was a maple board and I'd probably remember if it didn't have rolled edges.  The best MIM I had was a Robert Cray Strat, and that definitely didn't have rolled edges.

  • I've done the "screwdriver trick" on several maple necks over the years without cracking or flaking.  These were new Strats at the time (late nineties, early noughties).  Judging by the serials at the time they were several months between the factory and my home.

The fret ends have to match the same contours as the rolled edge fret board don't you think?

I think so, otherwise it could end up looking a bit scallopy

This is very similar to the Tele I posted about originally, not the easiest thing to photograph

Its a Player Plus Strat, I think Ive sold it but I nearly broke it for parts just to keep the neck….the Tele in the first post had a vey similar neck, the rolled edge is just sublime

And a generic Mex Strat neck with Pau Ferro board and standard fretboard edge

As mentioned above, the Vintera road worn have a rolled edge and also quite a fat neck; or at least the Telecasters do. The road worn relicing is very well done and not at all OTT like some. Nitro finish too. What's not to like.

Yeah that’s a touch more than I prefer but reasonable. It was more the comment about having to do the frets and scalloping that threw me.

That rolled neck looks not unlike my 99 mim strat.
