Gibson white button tuners on LP specials etc - different to tulip ones?

The white button tuners on my tribute special feel a bit different to the green(ish) tulip ones on my SG standard 61 - the SG ones feel a bit more precise and solid, though the casing looks the same. They’re individual tuners, not 3-on-a-plate on the special.

Can anyone confirm if they’re different beyond the type of button?

(Both guitars are modern ones)

I think they are pretty much the same, although Gibson have changed suppliers over the years.  The "Gibson Deluxe" Kluson-alikes used to be made by Schaller, long ago, but I don't know who makes them now.

For a very brief time they used TonePros-Kluson tuners on some models, which I think (I may be wrong) are the same as those now sold by Faber.  Again, they look almost exactly like the Gibson Deluxes.

    It's confusing...

There are at least three different manufacturers of these, which all look very similar. There are slight differences in the shape of the castings -especially how ‘square’ the corners are - and the quality/shininess of the nickel plating.

All of the twenty first Century "Gibson Deluxe" Kluson-alike machineheads I have seen were made by Ping Well. I invariably find them slightly sloppy with noticeable gear lash. This was all the excuse I needed to upgrade my Noughties LP Junior Special to a Schaller STK set with the proper white "bean" buttons.

One other difference to be aware of, vintage-correct 'heads have a push-in bushing in an 8mm drilled hole whereas the modern ones may have a threaded nut and washer arrangement requiring a 10mm hole. Adapter bushings are available but sometimes look odd.
    Be seeing you.

  • Thanks @Funkfingers , in that case I think I’ll upgrade to Schallers in due course.
