I had a DSL20CR on loan for a week and recorded both mic-ed and using the line out; the line out on that amp sounded like a radio with a tiny speaker. In comparison, the Katana next to it sounded almost Hi-Fi (both good and bad, I suppose).
After that, I bought a second hand DSL40C on the basis that I wasn't ever going to use the line out – or the rest of the additional features for that matter (price was also a big factor).

I suspect the second is more the design intention than the first - if you're recording, it's more normal to mic the amp, not always very close, and often with more than one. On stage, you want the least possible amount of fuss and clutter, and if anything it's easier to give the engineer something pre-EQ'd to sound like what they're expecting anyway - or if it's not like that already will deliberately do because that's what works best in the mix.
