What's Hot
I became the proud owner of this PG over the weekend, following a great part-ex deal with Sound Affects against my Explorer. It’s a used 2020 model - a few marks here and there that mean I don’t need to be precious with it, and it sounds
delicious!
I had a 2013 one too for a couple of years and really enjoyed it. I can’t recall clearly enough to tell the exact differences, but the TCI-version 408s in the ‘new’ one are superb and very,
very usable in all positions.
I’m also regularly playing through an S2 594 McC, and one of the rad SE HBii Piezos; this one compliments both pretty damn well - though I’m still planning to move the S2 on as it’s a little duplicative with some of my other gear.
It’s also the first time in a while I’ve had a Core, S2, and SE model in my possession side-by-side, a good time for comparisons methinks!

This 'new' one's a little more understated than the last (below), but that's part of the appeal to me if I'm honest!
Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.

I swapped out some of the plastics, and added some unplated brass posts as the stock ones were a bit chewed up from someone using the wrongsize screwdriver - I like the hybrid hardware look on PRSi anyway, even if the new pieces are outrageously priced for what they are!
They’re brilliant brilliant models. I’ve gigged a private stock a fair bit and it’s got amazing cut through, brilliant single coil tones and the brushstroke birds are my favourite.

I can't really fault anything about the stock configuration, though if I were to ever go private stock (I wouldn't) then I'd add a second volume control a la DGT. It's an elegantly simple and effective configuration, and these pickups really do need to be heard in-person - they should have a cult following imo, and I'd love to be able to put them into more of my guitars and future builds.
Hmm... @OilCityPickups what're the chances of being able to reverse-engineer them / create something similar? Tooling would be prohibitive for big runs, but I could draw up and 3D print some bobbins perhaps.

Apparently they're both ~8.98k output, and some sort of AlNiCo mag. I haven't checked the sizes yet but I've got various ones here to swap in, hopefully I'll find a match and make some assumptions about the alloy from that.
I get some of the dislike/apathy about them, they’re easily written off as an overly fancy and/or expensive brand, but for me they consistently hit the sweet-spot of what I like more than any other that I’ve found to date. I got my first US-one at ~19yo (a ‘98 Cu22) and I’ve been lucky enough to have a bunch more since then.
- Update on my PS wishlist - put the PG pickups into a HBii Piezo model… gigging bliss. I’m going to have to make my own version next year and see how it goes.
