How do you tell if a dual triode (ecc83, ecc82) is balanced?

Answer: If you stand the tube on its pins on a flat surface, and it falls over, that's def not balanced.

It is extremely unlikely that the two halves will be different to a very close tolerance. In fact, most guitar amps were built with 10% tol resistors (if you were lucky!) and I cannot believe a DT would be that far out.

But why do you care? In a typical 'cascade' circuit it matters no a jot if one stage has a tiny bit higher gm than the other. If you are thinking about cathode coupled PIs, the most common type by far, then once again, not a problem. Maybe if you wanted a very low distortion PI stage you could select for balance but, AFAIK no one ever did! Or, they would fit a balance trimmer.

Output stages are sometime balanced to null 2nd harmonic distortion and hum but not at all commonly.

    Dave.
